Freie Universität Berlin - Fachbereich Geowissenschaften - Institut für Meteorologie

The research of the working group "Weather and Climate Processes" headed by Stephan Pfahl covers various aspects of atmospheric dynamics, extreme weather events and the atmospheric water cycle. Numerical models of varying complexity and different observational data sets are used to study atmospheric processes and phenomena on time scales ranging from single weather events to long term climate change.

Research assistant (postdoc) (m/f/d)

full-time job
limited for up to 4 years
salary grade (Entgeltgruppe) 13 TV-L FU
reference code: PD_DYNAMICS

Working field:

The central research topic of the future position holder is mid-latitude dynamics on convective to synoptic scales and in particular the interaction between these scales, for instance the influence of convection on synoptic weather systems. Numerical models and reanalysis data will be used to improve our process understanding of such interactions on weather time scales and to estimate long-term changes of these processes in a changing climate. In addition, the research associate will have the opportunity to develop other research areas according to his/her interests. He/she will support research in the working group in various areas, supervise students and participate in teaching at the Institute of Meteorology. The employment serves the purpose of personal scientific qualification through research and the acquisition of teaching experience.

Requirements:

Completed scientific university degree in meteorology, physics or mathematics. Doctoral degree in atmospheric or climate sciences.

Desirable:
Experience in atmospheric dynamics and numerical analysis of large data sets (e.g., in Python). Fluency in English; knowledge of German or willingness to acquire it in a timely manner. Initial experience in teaching and supervising students, ability to work in a team.

How to apply:

For further information, please contact Prof. Dr. Stephan Pfahl (stephan.pfahl@met.fu-berlin.de / +49 30 838 64908).

Applications should be sent by e-mail, together with significant documents, indicating the reference code, no later than May 12th, 2025 in PDF format (preferably as one document) to Prof. Dr. Stephan Pfahl - secretary (Mrs. Coenders): sekretariat@met.fu-berlin.de or postal to
