The Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law is an Institute of the Max Planck Society, which is Germany’s most successful research organization. The Institute in Luxembourg conducts research in the areas of European law of civil procedure, international litigation and arbitration and dispute resolution in the financial markets.
The Max Planck Institute Luxembourg would like to appoint highly qualified candidates as:
Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f)

The Postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the five-year research project “Harmonisation of administrative sanctions and procedures in European Union financial markets law: developing an European model”. The research project will analyse the differences in substantive and procedural rules in the field of administrative sanctions for violation of European Union (EU) financial markets law. The research project will seek to determine which provisions could benefit from greater harmonisation at the EU level and/or which reforms could benefit Member State financial markets law, with the aim of achieving credible deterrence. The project will focus on key selected European jurisdictions (including the United Kingdom) and will include an analysis of the administrative sanction regime of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and comparisons with the United States and one province of Canada (Québec). It will also include empirical research.

Working field:
The successful candidate will conduct legal research under the supervision of Professor Pierre-Henri Conac - Max Planck Fellow at the MPI, Luxembourg and Professor of Financial Markets Law at the University of Luxembourg. She/He will work on substantive EU and national financial regulation regarding administrative sanctions and procedures, with a view on how to achieve credible deterrence.
You will also be able to work, with the authorisation of Professor Pierre-Henri Conac, on your own publications in the field of financial markets law.

Requirements:
- Master degree in Law and a PhD degree with outstanding results
- A deep knowledge of the candidate’s domestic financial markets (even if non-EU Member State) and of EU financial markets law
- Good knowledge of national criminal law would be an advantage
- Proficiency in English is compulsory (written & oral); other language skills (notably French and/or German and/or Italian) are an advantage
