Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung - Section S.3 "eScience“ in Berlin-Steglitz

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

Undergraduate Assistant (m/f/d) in the field of study Computer Science, Engineering or similar

35 - 40 hours/month
Temporary contract for 6 month
Hourly wage 12,68 Euro

Working field:

In an interdisciplinary project for the automated production of materials, a compact robotics platform will be built that will assist with important tasks in material synthesis. This includes handling liquids and solids, transporting vials and substrates with a robotic arm, and basic synthesis and analysis.

The compact robotic platform is currently under construction and further work is required to design this platform, in addition to using the new hardware to perform sample preparation tasks in collaboration with our researchers. The work will involve hardware integration tasks, where methods need to be programmed to communicate with hardware components using a manufacturer-specified protocol.

The young and agile project team of scientists and staff is involved in the construction of the robotics platform in an interdisciplinary way. Hardware-related programming, for example using an Arduino/Python framework, will be used to control the devices.

  • Hardware-related programming in Python and/or C++
  • Programming using the physical computing platform Arduino
  • Transfer or refactoring of existing source code in Python via Jupyter notebooks
  • Supporting further tasks in the field of data science

  • Student of a computer science, engineering, or comparable subject, preferably with a bachelor's degree
  • Very good knowledge of relevant programming languages such as Python and/or C++
  • Experience with collaborative software projects using version control systems (e.g., Git) is desirable
  • Initial experience with Arduino is desirable
  • Initial experience with computer vision libraries (e.g., OpenCV or skimage) is desirable
  • Interest in scientific work, as well as in topics such as hardware-related programming and technical computer science
  • Good knowledge of English
  • Ability to work (as well as organize and structure tasks) independently

You are enrolled at a German university for the period of employment.
The maximum working time with a part-time job is 80 hours per month.

What we offer:

  • Interdisciplinary research at the interface of politics, economics and society

BAM pursues the goal of professional equality between women and men. We therefore particularly welcome applications from women. In addition, BAM supports the integration of severely disabled persons and therefore expressly welcomes their applications. With regard to the fulfilment of the job advertisement requirements, the application documents are examined individually. Recognised severely disabled persons will be given preferential consideration if they are equally suitable.

The advertised position requires a low level of physical aptitude.
