Das Wis­sen­schafts­zen­trum Ber­lin für Sozi­al­for­schung (WZB) betreibt pro­blem­ori­en­tierte Grund­la­gen­for­schung. Work­ing field:

The WZB Ber­lin Social Sci­ence Cen­ter’s Global Gov­ernance unit in the research area Inter­na­tional Polit­ics and Law (Dir­ector: Prof. Dr. Michael Zürn) is seek­ing a

research fel­low (f/m/x)

to be employed for a period of three years, start­ing prefer­ably on 1st Feb­ru­ary 2021, with a weekly work­ing load of 25.35 hours (65% of full-time).

Task descrip­tion:

The task is to do research in the con­text of a pro­ject that aims to con­struct a typo­logy which provides an over­view of the diversity and rel­at­ive strength of the con­test­ants of the lib­eral script on a global scale. In addi­tion to con­cep­tual con­tri­bu­tions and empir­ical research using mixed meth­ods, it in-volves par­ti­cip­a­tion in joint pub­lic­a­tions and present­a­tion of the pro­ject res­ults at work­shops and con­fer­ences. The sci­ent­ist will be involved in a pro­ject team that con­sists of four research fel­low pos­i­tions. The team is headed by two pro­ject lead­ers. Moreover, he/she will be involved in the re-search pro­gram of the Global Gov­ernance unit ( and closely work with the Cluster of Excel­lence “Con­test­a­tions of the Lib­eral Script” (

It is encour­aged that the suc­cess­ful can­did­ate pur­sues a doc­toral degree, prefer­ably at the Ber­lin Gradu­ate School for Global and Trans­re­g­ional Stud­ies (BGTS), in par­al­lel with the pos­i­tion. Please keep in mind that the pos­i­tion is not open to per­sons already hold­ing a doc­toral degree.


  • Very good know­ledge of Polit­ical Soci­ology, Com­par­at­ive Polit­ics, Inter­na­tional Rela­tions, or Polit­ical The­ory,
  • Very good final marks (Mas­ter’s or equi­val­ent) in Polit­ical Sci­ence, Inter­na­tional Rela­tions, Soci­ology, or Philo­sophy,
  • Good know­ledge of qual­it­at­ive meth­ods (e.g., qual­it­at­ive inter­views, case stud­ies, qual­it­at­ive text ana­lysis) and/or quant­it­at­ive meth­ods (e.g., quant­it­at­ive text ana­lysis, cluster ana­lysis or factor ana­lysis) in the social sci­ences,
  • Very good com­mand of the Eng­lish lan­guage.

Expert­ise in Area Stud­ies as well as addi­tional lan­guage skills is an asset.

What we of­fer:

Up to salary group EG 13 in accord­ance with Ger­man Pub­lic Ser­vice Wage Agree­ment (TVöD Bund).
