Work­ing field:

The appoin­ted can­did­ate will be respons­ible for research and teach­ing in the field of pre­his­toric archae­ology with a focus on the later pre­his­toric peri­ods from the European Neo­lithic to the early Iron Age.

Along with the reg­u­lar offi­cial duties of pro­fess­ors lis­ted in Art­icle 99 of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the fol­low­ing activ­it­ies:

The Insti­tute has a long his­tory of regional research, and its lib­rary and inter­na­tional net­works reflect this research pro­file. The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate should there­fore either already under­take research and teach­ing with a regional per­spect­ive or be pre­pared to do so. A focus on east­ern cent­ral Europe, east­ern, and/or south­east­ern Europe would espe­cially com­ple­ment the Insti­tute’s cur­rent areas of research. The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate will be expec­ted to par­ti­cip­ate in design­ing and imple­ment­ing joint research pro­jects, and to work closely with the Ein­stein Cen­ter Chro­noi, the Ber­liner Antike-Kolleg, and the Ber­lin Gradu­ate School of Ancient Stud­ies. The pro­fessor will also super­vise and carry out know­ledge trans­fer activ­it­ies at the Insti­tute. He/She will also be expec­ted to address gender and diversity issues in his/her research and teach­ing.


Appoint­ment require­ments are gov­erned by Art­icle 100, Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act (Ber­liner Hoch­schul­ge­setz – Ber­lHG).

Suc­cess­ful can­did­ates should have a strong research focus on the European Neo­lithic, Cop­per, or Bronze Age, or any period up to and includ­ing the early Iron Age, that is, a focus within the over­all period c. 6500–500 BC, and should be able to demon­strate inter­na­tion­ally vis­ible, out­stand­ing research activ­it­ies and teach­ing at the uni­versity level. They should have demon­strat­able exper­i­ence in acquir­ing, imple­ment­ing, and lead­ing extern­ally fun­ded research pro­jects. Exper­i­ence in the applic­a­tion of sci­entific meth­ods, espe­cially in the field of archae­o­bi­o­logy, along with exper­i­ence in digital approaches, is essen­tial, includ­ing exper­i­ence in joint pro­jects. The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate should also have a record of high level research activ­it­ies in the con­text of field­work and inter­dis­cip­lin­ary pro­jects. He/she should be famil­iar with teach­ing and devel­op­ing the mod­ern meth­od­o­lo­gies used in archae­olo­gical site work, and be in a pos­i­tion to con­duct their teach­ing in both Ger­man and Eng­lish and in a way that is attent­ive and sens­it­ive to diversity issues.
