Graduate program at RWTH Aachen University and Münster University of Applied Sciences

Forschungskolleg Verbund.NRW is an application-oriented graduate program, and its goal is the investigation and further development of a sustainable, resource-efficient and recyclable use of complex, multifunctional composite materials and structures in the construction sector. In this program, eleven PhD students collectively work together on current issues from the perspectives of technology as well as social and economic sciences. As a graduate program, Verbund.NRW is distinguished by its highly inter- and transdisciplinary orientation. Therefore, numerous practical actors from industry and society are involved in the work of the research training group.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

Dissertation topic 1: Sociomaterial Constellations, Social Architecture

Scientific lead: Prof. Dr. phil. Roger Häußling
Institut: Sociology of Technology and Organization, RWTH Aachen University

The goal of this thesis is to research the effects of different sociomaterial constellations in the construction industry - especially with regard to societal megatrends such as digitalization of the workplace. Although Verbund.NRW deals with composite materials and constructions, the focus of this sociological research is not limited to individual building components. Instead, entire rooms should be understood as spaces in which various actors interact with each other as well as with different materials. In this sense, the question is raised of which effects stem from the materiality of such spaces in conjunction with different actors, and in how far this, in turn, creates new architectural challenges.

  • Identification, description and analysis of relevant sociomaterial constellations
  • Development of space-usage-scenarios with regard to the aforementioned sociomaterial constellations

  • Enthusiasm for the fields of science and technology studies, especially concerning the theoretical concept of New Materialism, and Social Architecture

  • active organization of and contribution in seminars, workshops and conferences,
