TIB, being part of the Leibniz Research Association, is with around 550 employees one of the largest technical information centres in Germany, having three main functions:
1. Acting in the capacity of the Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology, our forward-looking services secure the infrastructural requirements for providing researchers in science and industry with high-quality information and literature.
2. Carrying out cutting edge research to further expand TIB’s role as a German information centre for the digitisation of science and technology

Data Scientist/Ontology Engineer (m/f/d)

Working field:

The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) is an outstanding infrastructure initiative for the science communities in Germany with the aim to harness the great potential of Research Data as a valuable resource for science and research. As of 1st October 2020, the first round of NFDI consortia will receive funding for a period of five years, with the option of a five-year extension. TIB will play a key role in shaping the NFDI from the very beginning. The following position will be placed within this network.

Your challenge

Your role will be essential for the development of a National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI). The National Research Data Infrastructure for Engineering (NFDI4Ing) consortium brings together all engineering research communities and promotes the management of their research data. Thus, research data are made available in a sustainable way according to the FAIR principles under free licenses in a citable form. Behind NFDI4Ing are eight university and three non-university research institutions, including the TIB - Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology. Leading engineering scientists work in an open, dynamic and high-performance team with experienced infrastructure providers. In collaboration with Technische Universität Darmstadt, RWTH Aachen and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), TIB manages the development of RDM base services for engineering sub-disciplines and methods. This includes the development and implementation of a Terminology Service which will establish a comprehensive, integrated Internet of FAIR Data and Services through semantic representation, terminology-based interoperability, and accessibility and interlinking of research data.

Your tasks will focus on

  • Design of a terminology platform for access, subscription and curation of terminologies and ontologies for engineering workflows
  • Implementation of additional functionalities into the Terminology Service, e.g. quality assurance, subscription-based notification and synchronisation of terminologies between producers and consumers
  • Provision of training and support by creating and maintaining a ticket-based help desk
  • Coordination with related projects for content development within the TIB

You should be able to think creatively, grasp new knowledge quickly, be able to design and develop innovative software systems and be interested in mastering complex challenges.

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant field of study such as Computer Science, Information Science, Mathematics or comparable
  • Excellent proficiency in Semantic Web Technologies, Ontology development and Data Management
  • Excellent knowledge of one or more modern programming languages (especially Java, Python or C/C++) as well as proven experience in software development and modern methods of software development (especially Scrum, DevOps)

Desirable

  • Familiarity with Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics or Digital Libraries is an asset
