Ten­ure-Track Pos­i­tion as Junior Pro­fessor of Exper­i­mental Con­densed Mat­ter Phys­ics

Work­ing field:

This ten­ure-track pro­fessor pos­i­tion is sup­por­ted fin­an­cially through the Ger­man fed­eral and state gov­ern­ments’ ten­ure-track pro­gram to pro­mote the careers of research­ers early on. Applic­a­tions from research­ers who have just com­pleted their doc­toral degree and are in the early phase of their career are strongly encour­aged.

The suc­cess­ful applic­ant will assume respons­ib­il­it­ies in the field of exper­i­mental con­densed mat­ter phys­ics.

Along with the reg­u­lar offi­cial duties of pro­fess­ors lis­ted in Art­icle 99 of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the fol­low­ing activ­it­ies:

The new pro­fessor will inde­pend­ently man­age a group work­ing on top­ics in exper­i­mental con­densed mat­ter phys­ics. The appointee is expec­ted to par­ti­cip­ate in col­lab­or­at­ive pro­jects of Freie Uni­versität Ber­lin, for example, the Col­lab­or­at­ive Research Cen­ter TRR227 “Ultra­fast Spin Dynam­ics,” and engage in other ini­ti­at­ives within Ber­lin’s research com­munity. The appointee is expec­ted to be flu­ent in Ger­man and Eng­lish by the time of the ten­ure review. The can­did­ate is expec­ted to address gender and diversity issues as part of the teach­ing cur­riculum.

The pos­i­tion entails a three-year appoint­ment as a civil ser­vant for a fixed period (“Beamter/Beamtin auf Zeit”). Pending a suc­cess­ful review pro­cess, the pos­i­tion can be exten­ded for another three years. If the appointee suc­cess­fully passes their ten­ure review, they will be appoin­ted to a per­man­ent pro­fess­or­ship through a stream­lined appoint­ment pro­ced­ure (i.e., the per­man­ent appoint­ment will not be advert­ised as a sep­ar­ate pos­i­tion). As part of this pro­cess, per­form­ance goals will be nego­ti­ated at the time the junior pro­fessor is hired. The ful­fill­ment of those goals will be assessed as part of the ten­ure review (Art­icle 102 c of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act, § 102 c Ber­lHG).

The per­form­ance goals will cover (but are not lim­ited to) the fol­low­ing areas:

  • Research
  • Teach­ing
  • Pro­mot­ing early-career research­ers
  • Aca­demic com­mit­tee work
  • Lead­er­ship and man­age­ment
  • Lan­guage pro­fi­ciency

At the time of appoint­ment to the per­man­ent pro­fess­or­ship, all gen­eral reg­u­la­tions and con­di­tions regard­ing pub­lic sec­tor employ­ment must be ful­filled.

In addi­tion, any can­did­ates who com­pleted their doc­toral degree at Freie Uni­versität Ber­lin and/or are employed at Freie Uni­versität Ber­lin must com­ply with the reg­u­la­tions stip­u­lated by the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act, Art­icle102 c, para­graph 3.

Require­ments:

Appoint­ment require­ments are gov­erned by Art­icle 102a of the Ber­lin Higher Edu­ca­tion Act (Ber­liner Hoch­schul­ge­setz – Ber­lHG).

Can­did­ates should have a dis­tin­guished – ideally inter­na­tional – record of research in the field of exper­i­mental con­densed mat­ter phys­ics. Their back­ground should com­ple­ment the estab­lished research areas at the Depart­ment of Phys­ics of Freie Uni­versität Ber­lin. Pos­sible areas of expert­ise include:
  • ultra­fast sci­ence
  • nano­scale sys­tems, or
  • quantum optics in mater­i­als
Applic­ants are expec­ted to have rel­ev­ant teach­ing exper­i­ence at the uni­versity level, ideally in an inter­na­tional con­text, they should con­trib­ute to teach­ing at the Phys­ics Depart­ment in Ger­man and/or Eng­lish. In addi­tion, they should have con­sid­er­ably par­ti­cip­ated in the super­vi­sion of mas­ter and PhD stu­dents. Exper­i­ence in acquir­ing third-party fund­ing is con­sidered a bonus.

How to ap­ply:

Applic­a­tions should include a CV, cop­ies of all cer­ti­fic­ates of aca­demic qual­i­fic­a­tion in Ger­man or Eng­lish; let­ters of appoint­ment (please add trans­la­tions if applic­able), a list of pub­lic­a­tions, a list of courses pre­vi­ously taught and evid­ence of teach­ing com­pet­ence. Please include inform­a­tion on involve­ment in ongo­ing and future research endeavors, joint research pro­jects, extern­ally fun­ded pro­jects and, if neces­sary, lan­guage cer­ti­fic­ates. If applic­able, please give inform­a­tion on teach­ing exper­i­ence in primary and sec­ond­ary edu­ca­tion, part­ner­ships with industry, inven­tions/pat­ents, and spin-offs.
