Stu­dent Assi­stant in the area of AI for Opti­cal Com­mu­ni­ca­ti­ons

Work­ing field:

The Pho­to­nics Net­works and Sys­tems Depart­ment at the Fraun­ho­fer Insti­tute for Telecom­mu­ni­ca­ti­ons Hein­rich Hertz Insti­tute is cur­r­ently invol­ved in several rese­arch pro­jects focu­sing on Arti­fi­cial Intel­li­gence (AI) and edge com­pu­ting topics. In this regard, we are expan­ding our AI and edge-com­pu­ting infra­st­ruc­ture.

We are loo­king for a moti­va­ted stu­dent assi­stant, who is wil­ling to be invol­ved in cut­ting-edge rese­arch pro­jects, and has the fol­lo­wing skills/expe­ri­en­ces to sup­port the team:

  • know­ledge and expe­ri­ence of Linux with the abi­lity to write small bash scripts
  • Linux net­work and ser­vice admi­nis­tra­tion
  • fami­liar with Linux clus­ters, nodes, workload mana­gers such as SLURM
  • Python geek: pro­fi­ci­ent in wri­ting python scripts
  • fami­liar with conda envi­ron­ments, git and open source phi­lo­so­phy (ready to con­tri­bute to col­la­bo­ra­tive coding pro­jects). Fami­liar with soft­ware deve­lop­ment pro­ject pipe-line on git
  • eager to learn coding for AI app­li­ca­ti­ons
  • basic know­ledge of run­ning app­li­ca­ti­ons over GPUs
  • know­ledge and expe­ri­ence of com­pu­ter net­works
  • wil­ling­ness to main­tain git repo­si­to­ries, write docu­men­ta­tion, and pre­pa­ra­tion of soft­ware release
  • know­ledge of run­ning IT infra­st­ruc­ture using open-source packa­ges and envi­ron­ment

In addi­tion, having any of the fol­lo­wing skills would be highly desi­ra­ble:

  • know­ledge of app design and deve­lop­ment of soft­ware stacks
  • know­ledge of Pytorch and/or Ten­sor­flow
  • know­ledge in using and pro­gramming Unix shells
  • expe­ri­ence in con­fi­gu­ra­tion, instal­la­tion and main­ten­ance of net­work devices such as swit­ches, rou­ters, fire­walls, and VPN ser­ver
  • know­ledge of VMware and Ora­cle VM Box vir­tua­li­za­tion tech­no­lo­gies
  • know­ledge of con­tai­ne­ri­zed solu­ti­ons such as Docker


  • Enrol­led Bache­lor/Mas­ter stu­dent (m/f) in one of the fol­lo­wing pro­grams: Com­pu­ter Sci­ence, Infor­ma­tion Tech­no­logy, Elec­tri­cal Engi­nee­ring, Com­mu­ni­ca­ti­ons Engi­nee­ring
  • Qua­li­fied in the skills listed above
  • Basic know­ledge in data sci­ence, dis­tri­bu­ted com­pu­ting, ML, and AI
  • Team player with a struc­tu­red way of working and able to work with little gui­d­ance
  • Flu­ent in Eng­lish (ver­bal and writ­ten)
