MPI for Molecular Plant Physiology

The Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Molecular Plant Physiology was founded on 1st January 1994 under the founding director Prof. Dr. Lothar Willmitzer. About 360 employees from all over the world work on researching the secrets of plants. The Institute's work focuses on research into processes that determine or influence plant growth and biomass production.

Working field:

The MPI for Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam is looking (expected to start from September 2020), in the work group “Translational Regulation in Plants” under the supervision of Dr. Reimo Zoschke, for a highly motivated PhD student (m/f/d).

The project is centered on different aspects of translational behavior and regulation in plants with a focus on plastids. This will include the analysis of translational responses during temperature acclimation, the characterization of the role of nonessential tRNAs and ribosomal proteins as well as the discovery and analysis of factors that regulate translation.

What the project includes:
  • Analysis of translational regulation in plants with a focus on plastids
  • Application of state-of-the-art ribonomic methods (e.g. ribosome profiling)
  • Data analysis and modeling
  • Reporting and presentations in progress seminars and at conferences

  • Enthusiasm for basic research on plants
  • Experience in developing own ideas on a given project
  • Recent and outstanding Master of Science degree
  • Profound experience in molecular biology (ideally with plants)
  • Good command of English (oral and written)
  • Expertise in MS Office programs
  • Bioinformatics skills are advantageous (e.g. “R”)

What we offer:

  • PhD position for three years payed according to German public service pay scale (TVÖD Bund)
  • Competent mentoring
  • Working in an international team of cooperative and motivated scientists
  • Access to the infrastructure of one of the leading plant science institutes in the world
  • Working near by the exciting urban area of Berlin

How to apply:

Applications including cover letter (providing motivation, research interests, previous achievements), curriculum vitae, and the names of two referees should be sent by 16th July 2020 with the reference number 05/20 preferably by email to: or by post to:
