The Chair of Technical Thermodynamics at RWTH Aachen University covers all relevant scales for the description of a process starting from the molecules up to the full process scale. The chair presently hosts 4 professors and more than 40 PhD students. It is tightly engaged in cooperation projects on biofuel production and utilisation as well as on CO2 utilisation with industrial and academic partners. The open PhD position is located in the Molecular Systems Engineering group led by Prof. Leonhard.

Work­ing field:

There is a big need for sustainable pro­duc­tion pro­ces­ses for fuels and other base che­mi­cals from bio­mass and waste streams. Such pro­ces­ses should be at least eco­no­mi­c­ally com­pe­ti­tive and eco­lo­gi­cally supe­rior to exis­ting ones. We are imple­men­ting tools to design such pro­ces­ses by opti­mi­zing pro­per­ties of the mole­cu­les and the devices using quan­tum che­mi­cal, kine­tic and ther­mo­dy­na­mic models in com­bi­na­tion with device and pro­cess models in coope­ra­tion with the che­mi­cal engi­neers. You will con­tri­bute sub­stan­ti­ally to the deve­lop­ment of the methods and their inte­gra­tion into the design tools and employ them to design bio refi­ne­ries. Expe­ri­ment­ally vali­da­tion of the results is plan­ned with coope­ra­tion part­ners.


  • MSc Degree (or com­pa­ra­ble) in Che­mi­stry, Phy­sics, (Che­mi­cal) Engi­nee­ring or Engi­nee­ring Phy­sics.
  • First expe­ri­en­ces in com­pu­ta­tio­nal che­mi­stry or ther­mo­dy­na­mic model­ling, e.g. in app­lies quan­tum mecha­nics, sta­tis­ti­cal mecha­nics or equa­tion of state model­ling (e.g. PC-SAFT).
  • Expe­ri­ence in the deve­lop­ment and imple­men­ta­tion of algo­rithms (python, etc.).
  • Good writ­ten and ver­bal com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills in Ger­man and Eng­lish.
  • You are at least as enthu­si­astic about deve­lo­ping new mole­cu­lar models as about saving the world from cli­mate change.

Desi­ra­ble addi­tio­nal know­ledge and expe­ri­ence:
  • Team player, with good two-way com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills, highly self-moti­va­ted and able to work inde­pendently with excel­lent time manage­ment skills.

What we of­fer:

The posi­tion is for 15 mon­ths and is to be fil­led as soon as pos­si­ble. An exten­sion to a total of at least 3 years is plan­ned. This is a full-time posi­tion. It is also avail­able as part-time employ­ment per request.

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date has the oppor­tu­nity to pur­sue a doc­to­ral degree.

The salary cor­re­sponds to level EG 13 TV-L.
