The Research Training Group is concerned with the creation and significance of innovation in contemporary society. We adopt a broad notion of innovation. It comprises not only the novelties in technology and the economy that have been realized in society. Our notion of innovation includes novelties in science, art, culture, planning, politics, and other areas of society as well. The Research Training Group devotes special attention to three topic areas: developing a conceptual understanding of innovation that takes into account that, today, a great diversity of novelties is advanced and becomes an object of discourse in a wide range of different social spheres on the basis of a variety of different criteria; (2) analyzing the social production, continuation, and, where applicable, change of innovations in the context of the fields of innovation that form around an innovation topic and are constituted by actors who recurrently interact with one another in regard to that topic; and (3) reflecting on social analyses of innovation society according to which it is a fundamental characteristic of contemporary Western societies to positively connote changes that are perceived as innovations and view innovation as a key mechanism of societal problemsolving.
The Research Training Group promotes research on the topic of innovation that explicitly addresses issues related to the aforementioned three topic areas that comprise the Group’s field of research. A focus on one or more of the topic areas mentioned above is required, as is explicitly addressing the processes involved in the constitution of innovation.
The Research Training Group offers an interdisciplinary, research-intensive environment with a broad spectrum of advisors from the areas of sociology, planning sciences, economics, and political science. It supports exchanges between those involved in the Group by organizing colloquia and workshops and providing workspaces at a common location. Among our offerings are specially tailored seminars and open, in some cases self-organized, conferences with interna-tional scholars. The Group supports, for instance, the organization of research stays abroad, invitations to visiting scholars, and provides a family-friendly working environment.

Applicants must have an above-average completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in the field of social science or planning sciences.

Candidates will be selected on the basis of an informative, scientifically original proposal outlining the planned dissertation project. The proposal shall explicate the link between the planned research and the Group’s research field as described above and the contribution that the envisioned project expects to make in this context.
