The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Rese­arch Asso­ciate / PhD Posi­tion

The posi­tion ent­ails 50 % of the full­time weekly hours. The posi­tion will start on 01.08.2018 and is initi­ally limi­ted for 3 years. A con­tract exten­sion for a fourth year is pos­si­ble. The period of employ­ment is gover­ned by the Fixed Term Rese­arch Con­tracts Act (Wis­sen­schafts­zeit­ver­trags­ge­setz - Wiss­ZeitVG). The posi­tion aims at obtai­ning fur­ther aca­de­mic qua­li­fi­ca­tion (e.g. PhD).
The posi­tion is asso­cia­ted with the CRC 940 ‘voli­tion and cogni­tive con­trol’ (, which is fun­ded by the Ger­man Rese­arch Foun­da­tion. The CRC aims at iden­ti­fy­ing the cogni­tive and neu­ro­nal mecha­nisms, which under­lie the voli­tio­nal con­trol of goal-direc­ted actions as well as its dys­func­tions in selec­ted men­tal dis­or­ders.

Work­ing field:

The goal of the posi­tion is to deve­lop com­pu­ta­tio­nal, neu­ro­co­gni­tive models of goal-direc­ted action. The posi­tion is ideal to work as a model­ler in an inter­di­sci­pli­nary group of rese­ar­chers, where com­pu­ta­tio­nal model­ling will be used to ana­lyse and pre­dict expe­ri­men­tal pheno­mena. The can­di­date is expec­ted to extend and deve­lop, with sup­port of an expe­ri­en­ced model­ling group, com­pu­ta­tio­nal models of goal-direc­ted actions, work toge­ther with expe­ri­men­ters, and pre­pare manu­scripts.


a uni­ver­sity degree (mas­ter or diploma) in phy­sics, com­pu­ta­tio­nal neu­ro­sci­ence, or simi­lar; strong inte­rest to work at the inter­face bet­ween com­pu­ta­tio­nal and expe­ri­men­tal neu­ro­sci­ence. Alter­na­tively, a uni­ver­sity degree (mas­ter or diploma) in psy­cho­logy, cogni­tive neu­ro­sci­ence, or simi­lar, if there is docu­men­ted strong inte­rest in com­pu­ta­tio­nal model­ling. Pro­gramming skills in Mat­lab and a docu­men­ted inte­rest in cogni­tive neu­ro­sci­ence models and methods are of advan­tage.

What we of­fer:

The CRC and TU Dres­den pro­vide an out­stan­ding sci­en­ti­fic infra­struc­ture and ideal envi­ron­ment for inter­di­sci­pli­nary col­la­bo­ra­tion. For com­pu­ta­tio­nal work, the group has access to the TU Dres­den high-per­for­mance com­pu­ting clus­ters. Expe­ri­ments will be per­for­med at the Neu­ro­i­ma­ging Centre Dres­den ( The Neu­ro­i­ma­ging Centre is equip­ped with a rese­arch-only MRI scan­ner (Sie­mens 3T TIM Trio), MRI-com­pa­ti­ble EEG and eye tracking, and a tran­scra­nial magne­tic sti­mu­la­tion (TMS) unit.
