Head of a new Research Group (associate professorship level)

The WZB Berlin Social Science Center is a member of the Leibniz Association and a publicly funded institute for problem-oriented, basic social science research. Its work is characterized by long-term projects, theory-driven empirical research, multi-disciplinary cooperation, international comparison, and transnational perspectives.

The WZB is seeking to fill the position of a

Head of a new Research Group (associate professorship level).

Working field:

The research focus of the new research group will be on innovative social inequality research from a sociological perspective with a strong quantitative profile. The social inequality field is open (like social policy, poverty, health, migration) and should be complementary to the existing WZB research units – facilitating cooperation with other units within the cross-disciplinary research environment of the WZB.

Applicants for this position are expected to develop a five-year research program and show a strong interest in building and leading a research team. The research group is expected to start in summer 2018.

The successful candidate must have an excellent doctoral degree in sociology and be accomplished in the field of quantitative social inequality research. Candidates should have a relevant research profile, a strong publication record (high‐level international publications), excellent methodological skills, and experience in teaching and supervision.

What we offer:

  • The successful candidate will receive a five-year employment contract.
  • The remuneration is equivalent to an associate professorship (German S-W2-professorship).
  • The research group to be established will include two doctoral researchers (65% full time equivalent each).

At a later stage in the process, this WZB position is intended (if desired by the successful candidate) as a joint appointment for a five-year fixed-term associate professorship (S-W2-professorship, with one class per semester) at the Freie Universität Berlin. Applicants must meet the qualifications for appointment as a university professor (§100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, Berliner Hochschulgesetz).

How to apply:

Applications must include a concept for a five-year research program with a view to potential cooperation with other research units at the WZB (10-12 pages) as well as the usual documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications), three selected publications, a copy of the doctoral degree certificate, information on teaching and supervision experi-ence, and contact details of two referees.

The WZB expressly invites women and people with an immigrant background to apply. Equally well qualified disabled applicants will be given preference.

Please send your application documents electronically, as a single pdf document to Please submit your application by September 30, 2017.
