The mis­sion of the Leib­niz Centre for Agri­cul­tural Land­scape Research (ZALF) as a nation­ally and inter­na­tion­ally act­ive research insti­tute is to deliver solu­tions for an eco­lo­gic­ally, eco­nom­ic­ally and socially sus­tain­able agri­cul­ture – together with soci­ety. ZALF is a mem­ber of the Leib­niz Asso­ci­ation and is loc­ated in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Ber­lin-Lichten­berg). It also main­tains a research sta­tion with fur­ther loc­a­tions in Dede­low and Pau­lin­enaue.

PhD Stu­dent (f/m/d)

Working field:

The DFG fun­ded cooper­a­tion pro­ject (IR-SOM-ions) with the Uni­versity Kas­sel Witzen­hausen (Prof. B. Lud­wig) focus on the mech­an­istic under­stand­ing of the inter­ac­tion between OM and cations and their effects on the spec­tral prop­er­ties of OM using Vis/NIR, MIR, and micro-MIR to develop an improved pro­ced­ure for inter­pret­ing IR spec­tra. Within this pro­ject exper­i­ments for optim­iz­ing infrared spec­tro­scopic char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion and quan­ti­fic­a­tion of soil organic mat­ter at scales of increas­ing com­plex­ity will be designed together with the work­ing groups of Prof. B. Lud­wig (Uni­versity Kas­sel-Witzen­hausen).
We are offer­ing a part-time pos­i­tion (65%) for three years at our loc­a­tion in Müncheberg as PhD Stu­dent (f/m/d).

Your tasks:
  • Design and per­form sorp­tion exper­i­ments
  • Ana­lyze of water based mix­tures by infrared spec­tro­scopy (Vis/NIR, MIR, and micro-MIR).
  • Col­lect data and eval­u­ate them stat­ist­ic­ally.
  • Present the data at sci­entific con­fer­ences
  • Pub­lish the res­ults together with the pro­ject part­ners for the sci­entific com­munity

Requirements:

  • MSc or Dipl. in the field of soil sci­ence, chem­istry or com­par­able dis­cip­line
  • Know­ledge in lab-work, spec­tro­scopy, and stat­ist­ics
  • Will­ing­ness to learn new meth­ods and to work sci­en­tific­ally in inter­dis­cip­lin­ary teams
  • Exper­i­ence with mod­el­ling sys­tems or big data (bene­fi­cial)
  • Abil­ity and will­ing­ness to ana­lyze com­plex issues
  • Goal-ori­ented and inde­pend­ent work style
  • Cre­at­ive, enthu­si­astic, and enjoy sci­entific work
