The Insti­tute of Radi­ation Phys­ics con­ducts research for states of mat­ter under extreme con­di­tions and in very small dimen­sions.

As part of the Insti­tute, the Depart­ment of Laser Particle Accel­er­a­tion invites applic­a­tions as PhD stu­dent (f/m/d) Devel­op­ing radi­ation trans­port mod­ule for sim­u­la­tion code PICon­GPU.

The pos­i­tion will be avail­able from 1 Septem­ber 2022. The employ­ment con­tract is lim­ited to three years.

PhD stu­dent (f/m/d) Devel­op­ing radi­ation trans­port mod­ule for sim­u­la­tion code PICon­GPU

Working field:

  • Work on Com­pu­ta­tional Phys­ics to develop a radi­ation trans­port mod­ule for our sim­u­la­tion code PICon­GPU
  • Spe­cial aim will be on applic­a­tion to European XFEL (https://www.xfel.eu/index_eng.html) scat­ter­ing and XFEL or self emis­sion pec­tro­scopy prob­ing meth­ods, such as SAXS, Faraday Rota­tion, and XRTS
  • Work together with the exper­i­mental team to ana­lyze data and develop new exper­i­mental ideas, both for Helm­holtz Inter­na­tional Beam­line for Extreme Fields (HIBEF)-related XFEL exper­i­ments and exper­i­ments on our HZDR laser sys­tems DRACO and PENELOPE

Requirements:

  • Mas­ter`s degree in Com­pu­ta­tional Phys­ics or closely related dis­cip­line
  • Deep under­stand­ing of particle-in-cell codes and photon inter­ac­tion/trans­port phys­ics
  • Exper­i­ence in large scale sim­u­la­tions on high per­form­ance com­puter clusters
  • Thor­ough under­stand­ing of the phys­ics of inter­ac­tions of high power lasers with solids
  • Work­ing with Git­hub in a large col­lab­or­a­tion
  • Help­ful is know­ledge of C++, tem­plate pro­gram­ming, python, ALPAKA lib­rary, pro­gram­ming for accel­er­at­ors
