Wis­sen­schafts­zen­trum Ber­lin für Sozi­al­for­schung gGmbH - Social Sci­ences

The pos­i­tion is part of the inter­dis­cip­lin­ary research group "Tech­no­logy, Power, Dom­in­a­tion", which starts in mid-Septem­ber and is headed by Dr. Lena Ulbricht and Dr. Thor­sten Thiel; the Prin­cipal Invest­ig­ator is Prof. Dr. Jeanette Hof­mann. The group invest­ig­ates the chan­ging power rela­tions in the con­text of the digital trans­form­a­tion and the redis­tri­bu­tion of polit­ical agency. The aim is to ana­lyse the inter­play of tech­nical, polit­ical, eco­nomic and legal dynam­ics with regard to power and dom­in­a­tion and to identify demo­cratic options for shap­ing socio-tech­nical change. The research group will build on the out­comes of the two pre­vi­ous research groups "Quan­ti­fic­a­tion and Social Reg­u­la­tion" and "Demo­cracy and Digit­al­isa­tion".

2 Doc­toral Research­ers (f/m/x)

For the research group "Tech­no­logy, Power, Dom­in­a­tion” cur­rently being estab­lished at the Weizen­baum Insti­tute for the Net­worked Soci­ety,

Working field:

The pos­i­tion entails part-time (25,35 hours/week) employ­ment for three years, start­ing on 15 Septem­ber 2022 (sub­ject to approval). The research pro­ject is part of the Weizen­baum Insti­tute for the Net­worked Soci­ety fun­ded by the Fed­eral Min­istry of Edu­ca­tion and Research (BMBF), of which the WZB is an asso­ci­ated part­ner.

Your tasks and duties

  • Par­ti­cip­at­ing in the design and imple­ment­a­tion of the group's research pro­jects
  • Devel­op­ing of an indi­vidual research pro­ject and pre­par­ing a qual­i­fic­a­tion thesis in the sub­ject area
  • Pub­lish­ing research res­ults and pre­par­ing pro­ject reports
  • Present­at­ing pro­ject res­ults in aca­demic work­shops and con­fer­ences
  • Par­ti­cip­at­ing in the over­arch­ing activ­it­ies of the Weizen­baum Insti­tute
  • Con­trib­ut­ing to the trans­fer activ­it­ies and coordin­at­ing with col­lab­or­at­ive part­ners
  • weekly work­ing hours: 65% of the reg­u­lar weekly work­ing hours (cur­rently 25.35 hours)

Requirements:

  • very good or good Mas­ter's degree in polit­ical sci­ence, soci­ology or a related dis­cip­line
  • proven expert­ise in at least one of the cent­ral research fields of the group: digit­al­isa­tion research (esp. plat­forms and/or arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence), reg­u­la­tion and gov­ernance research, demo­cratic the­ory
  • Abil­ity to work both as part of a team and inde­pend­ently
  • very good or good know­ledge of both Ger­man and Eng­lish
  • Com­mit­ment to build­ing up the research group and interest in inter­dis­cip­lin­ary digit­al­isa­tion­re­search
  • Skills in qual­it­at­ive and/or quant­it­at­ive meth­ods of empir­ical social research is desir­able
