The Bun­des­an­stalt für Mater­i­alfor­schung und -prü­fung (BAM) is a mater­i­als rese­arch organ­iz­a­tion in Ger­many. Our mis­sion is to ensure safety in tech­no­logy and chem­istry. We per­form rese­arch and test­ing in mater­i­als sci­ence, mater­i­als engin­eer­ing and chem­istry to improve the safety of pro­ducts and pro­ces­ses. At BAM we do rese­arch that mat­ters. Our work cov­ers a broad array of top­ics in the focus areas of energy, infra­struc­ture, envir­on­ment, mater­i­als, and ana­lyt­ical sci­ences.

Under­gradu­ate Assist­ant (m/f/d) in the field of study Phys­ics, engin­eer­ing or com­par­able

Working field:

As part of a research pro­ject, you will develop meth­ods for laser-based ultra­sound excit­a­tion for applic­a­tions in non-destruct­ive mater­i­als test­ing as part of an inter­dis­cip­lin­ary research team. You will also carry out meas­ure­ments of the ultra­sonic field with the 3D laser Dop­pler vibro­meter.

  • Set­ting up, com­mis­sion­ing and test­ing meas­ure­ment set-ups for the non-con­tact excit­a­tion of ultra­sound in metal­lic com­pon­ents and plastics
  • Car­ry­ing out exper­i­mental invest­ig­a­tions for non-destruct­ive test­ing with laser ultra­sound
  • Acquis­i­tion of meas­ured val­ues and data eval­u­ation, devel­op­ment of data eval­u­ation algorithms
  • Present­a­tion of the meas­ure­ment res­ults


  • Stu­dents of the fol­low­ing or sim­ilar fields of study: Phys­ics or engin­eer­ing sci­ences, e. g. phys­ical engin­eer­ing, elec­trical engin­eer­ing, meas­ure­ment tech­no­logy, optical sys­tems, laser tech­no­logy or com­par­able
  • Good pro­gram­ming skills, e. g. in Mat­lab or Python
  • Exper­i­ence in optical meas­ure­ment tech­no­logy or laser tech­no­logy is desir­able
  • Basic know­ledge of acous­tics, wave propaga­tion in solids or ultra­sound phys­ics is an advant­age
  • Largely inde­pend­ent, care­ful way of work­ing, cre­ativ­ity in solv­ing open ques­tions, high level of com­mit­ment
  • Lan­guage skills: Ger­man or Eng­lish flu­ently spoken and writ­ten
