The tent­at­ive start­ing date is August 1, 2022 with flex­ib­il­ity for an earlier or later start. The pos­i­tion is ini­tially lim­ited to 3 years with the option of exten­sion and entails 65% of the full­time weekly hours. The period of employ­ment is gov­erned by the Fixed Term Research Con­tracts Act (Wis­senschaft­szeitver­trags­ge­setz - Wis­sZeitVG). The pos­i­tion offers the chance to obtain fur­ther aca­demic qual­i­fic­a­tion (e.g. PhD).

The pos­i­tion is avail­able in the junior research group of Dr. Dorothea Golze at TU Dresden. Dorothea’s research group launched in June 2021 as part of the Emmy-Noether pro­gram of the Ger­man Research Found­a­tion. The goal of the group is to develop highly accur­ate the­or­et­ical meth­ods for core-level spec­tro­scopy of com­plex mater­i­als. The pro­ject will focus on X-ray pho­to­elec­tron spec­tro­scopy (XPS) and X-ray absorp­tion spec­tro­scopy (XAS), which are power­ful tools for mater­i­als char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion.

Working field:

In your pos­i­tion you will develop highly accur­ate GW-based meth­ods for large-scale applic­a­tion to novel 2D frame­work mater­i­als. You will imple­ment a low-scal­ing GW algorithm for massively par­al­lel exe­cu­tion on the new gen­er­a­tion of (pre-)exas­cale super­com­puters, tak­ing also GPU accel­er­a­tion into account. The low-scal­ing GW code will be co-developed with the FHI-aims pro­gram pack­age and the devel­op­ment will pro­ceed in col­lab­or­a­tion with the FHI-aims developer’s com­munity as well the Novel Mater­i­als Dis­cov­ery (NOMAD) team. In later stages of your pro­ject, you will apply your meth­od­o­logy for the pre­dic­tion of XPS and XAS spec­tra of 2D mater­i­als in col­lab­or­a­tion with exper­i­mental and com­pu­ta­tional part­ners at TU Dresden, in par­tic­u­lar with the group of Prof. Thomas Heine.


Uni­versity degree in phys­ics / chem­istry / mater­ial sci­ence, pref­er­en­tially with the­or­et­ical back­ground. We are look­ing for a motiv­ated can­did­ate, who is inter­ested in elec­tronic-struc­ture the­ory and code devel­op­ment. Basic pro­gram­ming skills are expec­ted. Exper­i­ence in par­al­lel­iz­ing code on HPC plat­forms are a plus, but not man­dat­ory. However, a strong motiv­a­tion to learn pro­gram­ming for super­com­put­ing plat­forms is required.
