As a mem­ber of the Helm­holtz Asso­ci­ation of Ger­man Research Cen­ters, the HZDR employs about 1,400 people. The Cen­ter's focus is on inter­dis­cip­lin­ary research in the areas energy, health and mat­ter.

The Cen­ter for Advanced Sys­tems Under­stand­ing (CASUS) is a Ger­man-Pol­ish research cen­ter for data-intens­ive digital sys­tems research. CASUS was foun­ded in 2019 in Görl­itz and con­ducts digital inter­dis­cip­lin­ary sys­tems research in vari­ous fields such as earth sys­tems research, sys­tems bio­logy and mater­i­als research.

CASUS invites applic­a­tions, sub­ject to pro­ject approval, as Pro­fes­sional Sup­port (f/m/d) Machine Learn­ing and Data Sci­ence.

Pro­fes­sional Sup­port (f/m/d) Machine Learn­ing and Data Sci­ence

The pos­i­tion will be avail­able from 1 Janu­ary 2022. The employ­ment con­tract is lim­ited to two years.

Working field:

  • Sup­port the CASUS research areas in tasks related to machine learn­ing and data sci­ence
  • Develop machine-learn­ing infra­struc­tures and work­flows for sci­ence applic­a­tions in the CASUS research domains
  • Col­lab­or­ate with research teams on sci­entific prob­lems that need machine-learn­ing and data-sci­ence sup­port
  • Con­trib­ute to research pub­lic­a­tions in aca­demic, peer-reviewed journ­als in col­lab­or­a­tion with research teams
  • Com­mu­nic­ate your sci­entific res­ults at aca­demic ven­ues


  • B.Sc. in Com­puter Sci­ence, Data Sci­ence, Math­em­at­ics, Phys­ics, or a related sub­ject
  • Solid back­ground in math­em­at­ics and stat­ist­ics
  • Expert­ise in machine learn­ing and related stat­ist­ical meth­ods
  • Exper­i­ence with mod­ern soft­ware lan­guages (Python, C/C++, or Julia)
  • Strong motiv­a­tion to work in a col­lab­or­at­ive envir­on­ment
  • Excel­lent com­mu­nic­a­tion skills in a pro­fes­sional con­text
  • Desired Qual­i­fic­a­tions:
  • Famili­ar­ity with nat­ural lan­guage and image pro­cessing
  • Exper­i­ence with stat­ist­ical data sci­ence meth­ods (R)
  • Exper­i­ence with data­bases (SQL)
  • Exper­i­ence in dis­trib­uted ver­sion con­trol (SVN/Git)
