The research mis­sion of the Max Planck Insti­tute of Micro­struc­ture Phys­ics, Halle, Ger­many, Depart­ment of Nan­o­photon­ics, Integ­ra­tion, and Neural Tech­no­logy is to invent devices and microsys­tems for future com­put­ing. We have pro­jects in integ­rated photon­ics, AI accel­er­at­ors, implant­able brain probes, mini­ature micro­scopes, and 3D cell cul­tures. Our research crosses many bound­ar­ies. Our team mem­bers have an open mind and a strong tech­nical found­a­tion that enable them to respond to new chal­lenges.

Our depart­ment has a mix of Ph.D. stu­dents, postdocs, sci­ent­ists, and staff from around the world. The work­ing lan­guage in the Insti­tute is Eng­lish.

The Max Planck Soci­ety aims to employ more per­sons with dis­ab­il­it­ies and increase the num­ber of women in those areas where they are under­rep­res­en­ted; thus, applic­a­tions from per­sons with dis­ab­il­it­ies and women are encour­aged.

Postdoc­toral Fel­low in Neuron Net­work Mod­el­ling


Work­ing field:

For a pro­ject to build cir­cuits out of bio­lo­gical neur­ons for com­pu­ta­tion.

Your Tasks
  • Col­lab­or­ate with the team to com­plete a pro­ject to cre­ate neuron net­works that per­form com­pu­ta­tions
  • Build and sim­u­late mod­els of neur­onal cir­cuits that per­form com­pu­ta­tion tasks
  • Com­pare neur­onal cir­cuit com­pu­ta­tions against arti­fi­cial neural net­works and other machine learn­ing mod­els
  • Pro­pose and define neur­onal cir­cuits that exper­i­ment­al­ists can imple­ment, and com­pare the sim­u­la­tions with exper­i­ments
  • Train and work closely with other postdoc­toral fel­lows, stu­dents, and staff
  • Present research res­ults in inter­na­tional sci­entific journ­als and con­fer­ences


Your Pro­file
  • You have earned or will soon earn a Ph.D. Degree in neuroin­form­at­ics, neur­os­cience, bioen­gin­eer­ing, applied phys­ics, or a related dis­cip­line
  • You are motiv­ated by grand chal­lenges
  • You have exper­i­ence in neur­onal net­work mod­el­ling, using tools such as NEST
  • Exper­i­ence in mod­el­ling the effects of opto­gen­et­ics is help­ful
  • You have a demon­strated track-record of sci­entific pro­ductiv­ity
  • You excel at solv­ing prob­lems with cre­ativ­ity and resource­ful­ness
  • You are a fast learner and excited to learn about other dis­cip­lines
  • You are an effect­ive team player who excels in a fast-paced, highly dynamic, inter­dis­cip­lin­ary and inter­na­tional envir­on­ment
  • You have excel­lent writ­ten and oral com­mu­nic­a­tion skills in Eng­lish
