The Cluster of Excellence "Contestations of the Liberal Script" (SCRIPTS) is located at Freie Universität Berlin, in cooperation with the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, the Hertie School, the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), the Center for Eastern European and International Studies (ZOiS), and the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) [].
The Cluster of Excellence SCRIPTS assesses contemporary challenges for liberal democracy and market economy from historical, global, and comparative perspectives. It brings together expertise in social sciences and area studies in Berlin, and collaborates with research institutions as well as political, cultural and civil society groups worldwide. 
The postdoctoral position is part of a research project on the patterns, causes and effects of academic freedom contestations, which is situated between the RUs Orders and (Re-)Allocation. The researcher will contribute to the conceptualization, organization and implementation of the research project, which aims at the identification of the core content of the liberal norm of academic freedom, the mapping of patterns of its contestation, the explanation of contestations, and the exploration of some of the contestations’ first consequences for academic freedom as a liberal international norm. The researcher will work in an interdisciplinary context alongside other researchers, and will primarily focus on the mapping, explanation and consequences of academic freedom contestations.

Job description:

  • Contributing to the conceptualization, organization and implementation of the research project
  • Addressing the research questions using a range of different research methods, such as time series analysis, media and social media analysis, qualitative interviews, and case study research

  • Coordinating and collaborating with a team of researchers within and beyond the research project
  • Disseminating research results through publications, workshops and conferences


  • Completed university degree as well as a PhD in the social sciences and/or area studies

  • Research experience in the area of academic freedom; familiarity with related data sources

  • Strong background in the use of both quantitative and qualitative research methods of relevance to the analysis of academic freedom contestations
  • A PhD above average
  • Fluency in English, written and spoken; additional languages are an asset
