The Climate Informatics group at TU Berlin in collaboration with German Aerospace Center’s Institute of Data Science in Jena, jointly headed by Prof. Jakob Runge, combines innovative data science methods from different fields (causal inference, nonlinear dynamics, deep learning) and closely works with experts in the climate sciences to address climate change topics of critical importance for the society. But the methods are flexible and open for your ideas! We offer well-funded positions with the opportunity of extended research stays at our European and international partners.

Work­ing field:

  • Development of theory and methods for causal inference and machine learning.
  • Implementation of methods in open-source software.
  • Collaboration in the application of methods on observed and simulated Earth system data.
  • Publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of results on national and international conferences.
  • Supervision of students.
  • Building collaborations with national and international academic partners.

Require­ments:

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in mathematics, theoretical physics, statistics, or theoretical computer science.
  • Ability to attend international conferences.
  • Fluency in written and oral English required; knowledge of German or the willingness to learn it
Desirable:
  • PhD in mathematics, theoretical physics, statistics, or theoretical computer science.
  • Multi-year experience in independent work on highly complex research tasks.
  • Multi-year experience in the mathematical analysis of complex systems or machine learning, causal inference, statistical methods, or related areas.
  • Desire and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Creativity and strong motivation to develop new methods for climate science applications.
  • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals desirable.
  • Excellent pogramming skills desirable.
  • Excellent social communication skills.
