The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Rese­arch Asso­ciate / Post­doc

The posi­tion starts as soon as pos­si­ble and is initi­ally limi­ted until June 30, 2024. The period of employ­ment is gover­ned by § 2 (2) Fixed Term Rese­arch Con­tracts Act (WissZeitVG).
The posi­tion is part of an inter­di­sci­pli­nary rese­arch col­la­bo­ra­tion, the CRC 940 ‘Voli­tion and Cogni­tive Con­trol’ (, fun­ded by the Ger­man Rese­arch Foun­da­tion. The over­all aim of the CRC is to iden­tify the cogni­tive and neu­ro­nal mecha­nism that under­lie the con­trol of goal-direc­ted actions and decision making. Wit­hin the CRC, the spe­ci­fic aim of our group is to take a fresh look at the role of con­text-spe­ci­fic action selec­tion to enable fast and accu­rate decisi­ons in dyna­mic and uncer­tain task envi­ron­ments. The pro­ject will pro­vide an excel­lent oppor­tu­nity to work wit­hin an inter­di­sci­pli­nary envi­ron­ment of cogni­tive and com­pu­ta­tio­nal neu­ro­sci­en­tists, psy­cho­lo­gists and phy­si­cists. This pro­ject allows for the pos­si­bi­lity of col­la­bo­ra­ting with rese­ar­chers wit­hin the CRC whose rese­arch focu­ses on decision making in the con­text of cli­ni­cal or life­span psy­cho­logy.

Work­ing field:

At the Chair of Neu­ro­ima­ging (head: Prof. Ste­fan Kie­bel), the goal of this posi­tion is to ela­bo­rate on novel expe­ri­men­tal frame­works to inves­ti­gate plau­si­ble models of sequen­tial decision-making in the Baye­sian Brain. The suc­cess­ful app­li­cant will do this by
  • con­duc­ting both beha­viou­ral and neu­ro­ima­ging (pre­fer­a­bly fMRI) expe­ri­ments
  • tes­ting novel hypo­the­ses about con­text-modu­la­ted cogni­tive con­trol mecha­nisms using sequen­tial decision making tasks in col­la­bo­ra­tion with com­pu­ta­tio­nal rese­ar­chers at the chair
  • deve­lo­ping novel expe­ri­men­tal para­digms.
The can­di­date will be sup­por­ted in these tasks by an expe­ri­en­ced group of both expe­ri­men­tal and com­pu­ta­tio­nal rese­ar­chers.


uni­ver­sity and PhD/doc­to­ral degree in Cogni­tive Neu­ro­sci­ence, Psy­cho­logy or a simi­lar expe­ri­men­tal back­ground; good prior publi­ca­tion record; strong exper­tise in the ana­ly­sis of beha­viou­ral and neu­ro­ima­ging (pre­fer­a­bly fMRI) data; advan­ced pro­gramming skills in Mat­lab, R, or Python; high pro­fi­ci­ency in both ver­bal and writ­ten Eng­lish; abi­lity to work coope­ra­tively with col­leagues at all levels.
The CRC and TU Dres­den pro­vide an out­stan­ding sci­en­ti­fic infra­st­ruc­ture and ideal envi­ron­ment for inter­di­sci­pli­nary coope­ra­tion. For com­pu­ta­tio­nal work, the group has access to the Centre for Infor­ma­tion Ser­vices and High Per­for­mance Com­pu­ting at TU Dres­den. Expe­ri­ments will be per­for­med at the Neu­ro­ima­ging Centre ( The Neu­ro­ima­ging Centre is equip­ped with a rese­arch-only MRI scan­ner (Sie­mens 3T TIM Trio), MRI-com­pa­ti­ble EEG and eye tracking, and a tran­scra­nial magne­tic sti­mu­la­tion (TMS) unit. All expe­ri­men­tal faci­li­ties are sup­por­ted by expe­ri­en­ced phy­sics and IT staff.
