The “Terahertz Physics Group” studies phenomena that occur at extremely high frequencies in the so-called terahertz (THz) region from about 1 to 30 THz. This spectral range is relatively unexplored, although it coincides with numerous fundamental motions in condensed matter, for instance crystal-lattice vibrations (phonons), spin waves (magnons) and the scattering of conduction electrons (momentum relaxation). To reveal and ultimately control the dynamics and coupling of these modes, we develop sensitive optical methods based on ultrashort electromagnetic THz fields and optical laser pulses. To better understand our experimental results, we work out simple theoretical models. Our fundamental scientific insights are relevant for applications in information technology where bit rates are approaching the THz range, for instance in wireless networks and field effect transistors. We also explore our results directly for applications in THz photonics, including the development of novel emitters, detectors and modulators of broadband THz radiation.
We aim at studying and understanding the dynamics of spins and electrons on ultrafast time scales in magnetic nanostructures by using terahertz and optical ultrashort laser pulses. Specifically, we want to use spintronic concepts (e.g. spin Hall effect, spin orbit torque or Zeeman torque) to detect terahertz pulses with a large bandwidth. To this end, an optimization of materials and geometries of the employed nanostructures will be performed to increase the terahertz detection sensitivity and bandwidth. For a better understanding, basic models will be developed, and simulations will be conducted.
PhD in physics
Experience in at least one of the following areas: Femtosecond laser spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, optics, solid-state physics, magnetism, spintronics, simple theoretical modeling
