Work­ing field:

The “Tera­hertz Phys­ics Group” stud­ies phe­nom­ena that occur at extremely high fre­quen­cies in the so-called tera­hertz (THz) region from about 1 to 30 THz. This spec­tral range is rel­at­ively unex­plored, although it coin­cides with numer­ous fun­da­mental motions in con­densed mat­ter, for instance crys­tal-lat­tice vibra­tions (phon­ons), spin waves (magnons) and the scat­ter­ing of con­duc­tion elec­trons (momentum relax­a­tion). To reveal and ulti­mately con­trol the dynam­ics and coup­ling of these modes, we develop sens­it­ive optical meth­ods based on ultrashort elec­tro­mag­netic THz fields and optical laser pulses. To bet­ter under­stand our exper­i­mental res­ults, we work out simple the­or­et­ical mod­els. Our fun­da­mental sci­entific insights are rel­ev­ant for applic­a­tions in inform­a­tion tech­no­logy where bit rates are approach­ing the THz range, for instance in wire­less net­works and field effect tran­sist­ors. We also explore our res­ults dir­ectly for applic­a­tions in THz photon­ics, includ­ing the devel­op­ment of novel emit­ters, detect­ors and mod­u­lat­ors of broad­band THz radi­ation.

Job descrip­tion:

We aim at study­ing and under­stand­ing the dynam­ics of spins and elec­trons on ultra­fast time scales in mag­netic nano­struc­tures by using tera­hertz and optical ultrashort laser pulses. Spe­cific­ally, we want to use spin­tronic con­cepts (e.g. spin Hall effect, spin orbit torque or Zee­man torque) to detect tera­hertz pulses with a large band­width. To this end, an optim­iz­a­tion of mater­i­als and geo­met­ries of the employed nano­struc­tures will be per­formed to increase the tera­hertz detec­tion sens­it­iv­ity and band­width. For a bet­ter under­stand­ing, basic mod­els will be developed, and sim­u­la­tions will be con­duc­ted.
