The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship (W1) in North Ame­ri­can Lite­ra­ture with a Focus on Future Stu­dies (with ten­ure track to W2)

As part of the Ten­ure Track Pro­gramme of the Ger­man Federal Government and the Federal Sta­tes, the Faculty of Lin­gu­is­tics, Lite­ra­ture and Cul­tu­ral Stu­dies, Insti­tute of Eng­lish and Ame­ri­can Stu­dies invi­tes app­li­ca­ti­ons for the Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship (W1) in North Ame­ri­can Lite­ra­ture with a Focus on Future Stu­dies (with ten­ure track to W2)
with a four year con­tract as a tem­porary public offi­cial, to be fil­led not later than Octo­ber 1st 2020. After a posi­tive inte­rim eva­lua­tion, the employ­ment will be exten­ded to a total of 6 years. In the fifth year, a faculty-wide and school-wide com­mis­sion will eva­luate the achie­ve­ments of the can­di­date in terms of a ten­ure eva­lua­tion. Fol­lo­wing a posi­tive eva­lua­tion, a per­ma­nent Chair (W2) of North Ame­ri­can Lite­ra­ture with a Focus on Future Stu­dies will be gran­ted wit­hout a rene­wed selec­tion pro­cess. Eva­lua­tion cri­te­ria, mutually agreed upon when the posi­tion is accep­ted, will form the basis of the eva­lua­tion pro­ce­du­res.

Work­ing field:

Essen­tial ele­ments of the eva­lua­ti­ons will be aca­de­mic suc­cess in form of publi­shing regu­larly in peer-reviewed jour­nals and antho­lo­gies, the suc­cess­ful acqui­si­tion of third-party rese­arch funds, active par­ti­ci­pa­tion in col­la­bo­ra­tive pro­jects wit­hin the uni­ver­sity, the orga­ni­za­tion of at least one inter­na­tio­nal con­fe­rence, active par­ti­ci­pa­tion in didac­tic mea­su­res for hig­her edu­ca­tion, invol­ve­ment in the field of know­ledge trans­fer as well as posi­tively eva­lua­ted tea­ching per­for­mance in Eng­lish at the level of a W1 Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship.

During the tem­porary Junior Pro­fes­sor­ship, the hol­der of the posi­tion must prove that she/he is capa­ble of ful­fil­ling all of the rese­arch and tea­ching requi­re­ments in the field of North Ame­ri­can lite­ra­ture, inclu­ding its his­to­ri­cal per­spec­tive. We pre­fer can­di­da­tes with a cul­tu­ral stu­dies ori­en­ta­tion who are fami­liar with inter­di­sci­pli­nary rese­arch con­texts. The suc­cess­ful can­di­date needs to have spe­cia­li­zed in at least one area of Ame­ri­can Stu­dies that addres­ses futu­ro­lo­gi­cal ques­ti­ons (post­hu­ma­nism, human-machine inter­ac­tion, arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence, bio­tech­no­logy, Tech­no­sci­ence, Spe­cu­la­tive Fic­tion, Envi­ron­men­tal Stu­dies, Sustai­na­bi­lity). We pre­fer can­di­da­tes with expe­ri­en­ces in inter­na­tio­nal set­tings and in acqui­ring third-party funds. In addi­tion to coope­ra­tion with other chairs at the Insti­tute of Eng­lish and Ame­ri­can Stu­dies, the app­li­cant is expec­ted to be invol­ved in inter­di­sci­pli­nary and cross-faculty rese­arch, in par­ti­cu­lar through input for exis­ting tea­ching and rese­arch alli­an­ces at the School of Huma­nities and Social Sci­en­ces and through active par­ti­ci­pa­tion in estab­li­shing new rese­arch col­la­bo­ra­ti­ons in the Rese­arch Prio­rity Area “Cul­ture and Socie­tal Change”. The suc­cess­ful can­di­date will be requi­red to teach 4 aca­de­mic hours per week. One of the main tasks in tea­ching is to work in the Eng­lish-Ame­ri­can Stu­dies degree pro­grams, inclu­ding tea­ching Eng­lish to Edu­ca­tion stu­dents. We wel­come invol­ve­ment in deve­lo­ping new cour­ses and inter­di­sci­pli­nary tea­ching. Active par­ti­ci­pa­tion in aca­de­mic self-admi­nis­tra­tion and in the aca­de­mic com­mit­tees of the faculty is requi­red.


Requi­re­ments for an appoint­ment are a com­ple­ted uni­ver­sity degree, pedago­gi­cal sui­ta­bi­lity, a par­ti­cu­lar apti­tude for aca­de­mic work, usually accoun­ted for by the out­stan­ding qua­lity of a doc­to­rate/PhD. We seek out­stan­ding can­di­da­tes in an early phase of their aca­de­mic career. App­li­cants must ful­fil the employ­ment qua­li­fi­ca­tion requi­re­ments of § 63 of the Act on the Auto­nomy of Insti­tu­ti­ons of Hig­her Edu­ca­tion in the Free State of Sax­ony (SächsHSFG) and should be in an early stage of their post-doc phase. Can­di­da­tes who hold a TUD PhD (or equi­va­lent) must have worked for at least two years in a rese­arch posi­tion out­side of TU Dres­den to be eli­gi­ble.
