Work­ing field:

The Clus­ter of Excel­lence Mat­ters of Activity invi­tes app­li­ca­ti­ons for a doc­to­ral posi­tion as part of its struc­tu­red doc­to­ral pro­gram. The doc­to­ral pro­gram pro­mo­tes disci­pli­nary doc­to­ra­tes in con­nec­tion with joint rese­arch in an inter­di­sci­pli­nary working group with a pro­gram dura­tion of 36 mon­ths.

Job descrip­tion:
The pro­ject »Cut­ting« seeks to fill a doc­to­ral stu­dent posi­tion to fur­ther deve­lop the con­cept and app­li­ca­tion of »Vir­tual Dis­sec­tion«. The rese­arch pro­ject will focus in par­ti­cu­lar on the inves­ti­ga­tion of the use of hap­tic, i.e. tan­gi­ble feed­back in inter­ac­tive data visua­li­za­ti­ons wit­hin the aug­men­ted rea­lity and/or vir­tual rea­lity envi­ron­ment. The case study will be roo­ted in func­tio­nal ver­te­brate mor­pho­logy and will test the poten­tial for the gain of know­ledge into form-func­tion rela­ti­ons­hips. This is to be achie­ved through inter­ac­tive spa­tial data explo­ra­tion and force-feed­back for the dif­fe­ren­tia­tion of tis­sues in com­bi­ned and cross-regis­te­red ima­ging data­sets stem­ming from diverse moda­li­ties (CT, MRT, etc.). The over­ar­ching goal is the iden­ti­fi­ca­tion of gene­ral princi­ples of feed­back-infor­med vir­tual dis­sec­tion approa­ches that could be fur­ther used in the con­texts of com­pu­ta­tio­nal medi­cine and evo­lu­tio­nary bio­logy.

The work will bene­fit from an inter­di­sci­pli­nary team of col­la­bo­ra­ting part­ners wit­hin the Clus­ter of Excel­lence Mat­ters of Activity. Image Space Mate­rial and is car­ried out in close coope­ra­tion with the Visual Data Ana­ly­sis depart­ment at the Zuse Insti­tute Ber­lin, the Human-Cen­te­red Com­pu­ting rese­arch group at the FU Ber­lin, and the Mor­pho­logy and the History of Forms labo­ra­tory at the Insti­tute of Bio­logy of the HU, Ber­lin.


A com­ple­ted uni­ver­sity degree in Com­pu­ter Sci­ence, Com­pu­ter visua­li­za­tion or Com­pu­ter Gra­phics, e. g., with a focus on bio­me­di­cal ima­ging and/or feed­back imple­men­ta­tion in AR/VR envi­ron­ments; expe­ri­ence with the soft­ware »Unity« (https:/ or other VR engi­nes; expe­ri­en­ces and qua­li­fi­ca­ti­ons in ima­ging-based cha­rac­te­ri­sa­tion of (bio­lo­gi­cal) struc­tures, bio-mate­ri­als sci­en­ces, image ana­ly­sis of bio­lo­gi­cal mate­ri­als, model­ling and simu­la­tion of bio­lo­gi­cal struc­tures (kine­ma­tics and dyna­mics) are desi­ra­ble; strong inte­rest in inter­di­sci­pli­nary rese­arch is essen­tial and any expe­ri­ence in this regard is an advan­tage; high pro­fi­ci­ency in spo­ken and writ­ten Eng­lish; be highly moti­va­ted, able to work inde­pendently and as part of a team
