star­ting pre­fer­a­bly on July 1, 2019, for the EU-Hori­zon 2020 Pro­ject “Tech­no­lo­gi­cal ine­qua­lity – Under­stan­ding the rela­tion bet­ween recent tech­no­lo­gi­cal inno­va­tions and social ine­qua­li­ties (TECH­NE­QUA­LITY)”. Depen­ding on the app­li­cant’s aca­de­mic pro­file/qua­li­fi­ca­tion, we are offe­ring

a full-time posi­tion (39 hours per week) for post­doc­to­ral rese­ar­chers


a part-time posi­tion (65% posi­tion, cur­r­ently 25,35 hours per week) for rese­ar­chers pur­suing a Ph.D.

The WZB is a publicly finan­ced inter­na­tio­nal social sci­ence insti­tu­tion that con­ducts basic rese­arch that is theory-based and pro­blem-ori­en­ted (see: The posi­tion will be atta­ched to the rese­arch depart­ment “Skill For­ma­tion and Labor Mar­kets” (Direc­tor: Pro­fes­sor Heike Solga).

The aim of the TECH­NE­QUA­LITY pro­ject is to push bey­ond the cur­rent rese­arch fron­tiers by focu­sing on the broa­der socie­tal impact of tech­no­lo­gi­cal deve­lop­ments. The inter­di­sci­pli­nary TECH­NE­QUA­LITY con­sor­tium brings tog­e­ther socio­lo­gists and eco­no­mists from several European uni­ver­si­ties and rese­arch insti­tu­tes (Oxford, Stock­holm, Flo­rence, Tal­linn, Maas­tricht, Til­burg, and Ber­lin). Wit­hin the con­sor­tium, the WZB leads the work package “Edu­ca­ting today for tomor­row’s labour mar­ket” (local PIs: Heike Solga, Rein­hard Pollak, and Mar­tin Ehlert) – mainly working tog­e­ther with Maas­tricht (ROA), Flo­rence (EUI), and Tal­linn Uni­ver­sity. This work package zooms in on edu­ca­tion sys­tems’ capa­ci­ties to pro­vide appro­priate oppor­tu­nities for indi­vi­du­als’ early and con­ti­nuous skills acqui­si­tion, the inter­play bet­ween edu­ca­tion sys­tems and tech­no­lo­gi­cal chan­ges, as well as dif­fe­rent types of ine­qua­li­ties in new skill acqui­si­tion. Spe­ci­fi­cally, it focus­ses on empi­ri­cally exami­ning the match bet­ween edu­ca­tio­nal bio­gra­phies and skills and the impact that edu­ca­tion sys­tems, fami­lies, and work­pla­ces as lear­ning oppor­tu­nities have on this rela­ti­ons­hip. The ana­ly­ses will make use of lon­gi­tu­di­nal and com­pa­ra­tive data sources such as NEPS or PIAAC.

  • Con­tri­bu­tion to the theo­re­ti­cal and empi­ri­cal deve­lop­ment of the pro­ject,
  • Close coope­ra­tion with all pro­ject par­ti­ci­pants,
  • Par­ti­ci­pa­tion in joint publi­ca­ti­ons,
  • Pre­sen­ta­tion of pro­ject results in work­shops and con­fe­ren­ces,
  • Sup­port of coor­di­na­tion tasks with the pro­ject part­ners.

The rese­arch fel­low is sup­por­ted by a rese­arch assi­stant. The WZB and the rese­arch depart­ment pro­vide various forms of sup­por­ting the career deve­lop­ment of young rese­ar­chers, inclu­ding the coor­di­na­tion of work/family obli­ga­ti­ons or the pos­si­bi­lity to teach cour­ses at uni­ver­si­ties in Ber­lin or else­where. The WZB was the first Ger­man insti­tu­tion to receive the "HR Excel­lence in Rese­arch Award" from the European Com­mis­sion in June 2013.

Requi­re­ments, depen­ding on qua­li­fi­ca­tion:
  • Excel­lent aca­de­mic creden­ti­als (mas­ter’s or Ph.D. degree) in socio­logy or a rele­vant field in Social Sci­en­ces,
Accord­ing to qua­li­fi­ca­tion level:
  • Out­stan­ding know­ledge of quan­ti­ta­tive rese­arch methods, espe­ci­ally in lon­gi­tu­di­nal data ana­ly­ses (expe­ri­en­ces in com­pa­ra­tive rese­arch or mul­ti­le­vel data ana­ly­sis are wel­come but not requi­red),
  • Excel­lent know­ledge in labor mar­ket or edu­ca­tion rese­arch,
  • Excel­lent Eng­lish wri­ting and com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills,
  • Know­ledge of Ger­man is wel­come but not requi­red.
  • For post­doc­to­ral app­li­cants: at least one peer-reviewed jour­nal arti­cle, eit­her published or, in case of a very recently com­ple­ted Ph.D., sub­mit­ted.
