The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Rese­arch Asso­ci­ate / Team lea­der / Advan­ced Sci­ent­ist “Non­lin­ear Dynam­ics, Com­plex Net­worked Sys­tems, with a focus on Mobil­ity and Trans­port”

Terms: the posi­tion is a 4-year appoint­ment and starts as soon as pos­si­ble. The period of em-ploy­ment is gover­ned by the Fixed Term Rese­arch Con­tracts Act (Wis­sen­schafts­zeit­ver-trags­ge­setz – Wiss­ZeitVG).

Work­ing field:

The newly estab­lished Chair of Net­work Dynam­ics of Prof. Dr. Marc Timme stri­ves for advan­cing our con­cep­tual under­stand­ing of col­lect­ive phe­nom­ena emer­ging in net­work dynam­ical sys­tems across fields. It brid­ges fun­da­men­tal top­ics from the The­or­et­ical Phys­ics of com­plex sys­tems to ques­tions on the col­lect­ive func­tion of bio­lo­gical and bio-inspi­red sys­tems and on self-organ­ized solu­tions for engin­eer­ing sys­tems and sus­tain­ab­il­ity. Through math­em­at­ical, the­or­et­ical and com­pu­ta­tio­nal mul­tidi­scip­lin­ary rese­arch and devel­op­ment it add­res­ses press­ing chal­len­ges in a wide range of rese­arch areas, includ­ing the decent­ral com­put­ing in arti­fi­cial and bio­lo­gical cir­cuits, optim­iz­a­tion and design of flex­ible and net­worked mobil­ity sys­tems, the col­lect­ive dynam­ics of future-com­pli­ant power grids, the cre­ation of con­di­tions under­ly­ing sys­temic sus­tain­ab­il­ity and risk mit­ig­a­tion and net­work inverse prob­lems of identi­fy­ing and design­ing inter­ac­tion topo­logy under­ly­ing a given sys­tem’s dynam­ics and func­tion.
  • The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate will con­trib­ute to world-lead­ing rese­arch and teach­ing on col­lect­ive phe­nom­ena in com­plex dynam­ical sys­tems as well as the­or­et­ical phys­ics
  • the work is dri­ven by the aim of reveal fun­da­men­tal con­cep­tual, math­em­at­ical, and the­or­et­ical insights, is inspi­red by and aims at feed­ing back to nat­ural and human-made sys­tems.
  • A focus on mobil­ity or sus­tain­ab­il­ity is desi­red.
  • The can­did­ate will also deve­lop math­em­at­ical and com­pu­ta­tio­nal tools
  • mine, ana­lyze, struc­ture and con­sol­id­ate exper­i­men­tal and numer­ical data
  • help estab­lish­ing col­lab­or­a­tions wit­hin TU Dres­den and bey­ond
  • act­ively engage in the­or­et­ical phys­ics and cross-dis­cip­lin­ary teach­ing and out­reach, take respons­ib­il­ity for organ­iz­a­tio­nal tasks and/or IT and sys­tems admin­is­tra­tion tasks wit­hin the Chair and bey­ond.


We aim at attract­ing the best tal­ents from the exact sci­ences bet­ween stat­ist­ical phys­ics, non­lin­ear dynam­ics and app­lied math­em­at­ics. Hence, we expect:
  • an out­stand­ing uni­ver­sity degree and doc­toral degree in the­or­et­ical phys­ics or app­lied math­em­at­ics; some work­ing exper­i­ence as Post­doc
  • exper­i­ence in the ana­lysis, design or infer­ence for col­lect­ive phe­nom­ena in com­plex sys­tems, ide­ally for net­work dynam­ical sys­tems
  • sound com­pu­ta­tio­nal know­ledge and skills
  • advan­ced IT know­ledge requi­red for the above tasks
  • exper­i­ence in teach­ing and course organ­iz­a­tion
  • very good inter­per­sonal and com­mu­nic­a­tion skills
  • in par­tic­u­lar, the abil­ity to effect­ively work in col­lab­or­at­ive rese­arch efforts, the abil­ity to write and pre­sent con­cisely
  • an inde­pend­ent, tar­get- and solu­tion-dri­ven work atti­tude
  • inter- and mul­tidi­scip­lin­ary think­ing
  • strong motiv­a­tion and inte­rest to join one of the most ambi­tious inter­dis­cip­lin­ary rese­arch teams in the field
  • very good com­mand of Eng­lish - writ­ten and oral. Exper­i­ence in any of the above rese­arch top­ics is a plus but not requi­red.

TU Dres­den
The TU Dres­den is among the top uni­ver­si­ties in Ger­many and Europe and one of the ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an ‘elite uni­ver­sity’ in June 2012.
