The department of physics at RWTH Aachen University offers a vibrant community playing leading roles in several particle physics experiments, including high-energy collider (CMS experiment), astro-particle physics, neutrino physics as well as the search for dark matter axions (MADMAX experiment). We work on operations and data analysis for existing experiments as well as research and development for future experiments. PhD position

Work­ing field:

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date will par­ti­ci­pate in the early rese­arch and deve­lop­ment phase of the MAD­MAX expe­ri­ment. The MAD­MAX expe­ri­ment will be the first imple­men­ta­tion of a dielectric halo­scope on the search for relic axi­ons that could be res­pon­si­ble for the obser­ved dark mat­ter in the uni­verse. The task will be to per­form simu­la­ti­ons and sen­si­ti­vity esti­ma­ti­ons for the expe­ri­ment, to par­ti­ci­pate in the com­mis­sio­ning of a pro­to­type as well as rese­arch and deve­lop­ment for basic com­po­n­ents of the expe­ri­ment such as the cha­rac­te­riza­t­ion of can­di­date mate­ri­als to be used in the halo­socpe.

Require­ments:

We are loo­king for excel­lent app­li­cants with an Uni­ver­sity degree (Mas­ter or equi­va­lent) in expe­ri­men­tal par­ti­cle phy­sics and the poten­tial to drive pro­gress in a new field of axion phy­sics. Expe­ri­ence with simu­la­tion soft­ware and/or prac­tical expe­ri­ence in radio-fre­quency tech­no­logy are bene­fi­cial.

What we of­fer:

The posi­tion is limi­ted to 3 years and is to be fil­led as soon as pos­si­ble. This is a part-time posi­tion (50% of the stan­dard weekly hours for full-time employees).

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date has the oppor­tu­nity to pur­sue a doc­to­ral degree.

The salary cor­re­sponds to level TV-L 13.
