The Department of Physics at RWTH Aachen University offers a vibrant community of particle physicists who play leading roles in detector commissioning and operations, design and development of detector upgrades and analysis of CMS data. Our institute has, among other things, built part of the CMS drift-tube muon detectors and is engaged in the operation and upgrade of this system. There is close and frequent collaboration with other local experimental groups, including engineering. Workshop capacity for mechanics and electronics is available. Postdoctoral Research Associate

Work­ing field:

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date is expec­ted to streng­t­hen our group in the area of expe­ri­men­tal par­ti­cle phy­sics (muon detec­tion) and should take a lea­ding role in the upgrade tasks we are res­pon­si­ble for. Our insti­tute cont­ri­bu­tes in par­ti­cu­lar to the deve­lop­ment and con­struc­tion of a test stand for the new rea­dout scheme, the design and test of a new on-detec­tor ser­vice module, and age­ing tests of the DT cham­bers at CERN.

Require­ments:

  • We are loo­king for app­li­cants with a Ph.D. in par­ti­cle phy­sics and expe­ri­ence in detec­tor deve­lop­ment and ope­ra­tion. The scope of the rese­arch inte­rest should be wit­hin the sci­en­ti­fic pro­jects of the insti­tute, in par­ti­cu­lar the upgrade of the CMS muon detec­tor sys­tem and rela­ted R&D tasks.
  • Know­ledge in elec­tro­nics, detec­tor hard­ware, rela­ted soft­ware and ope­ra­ti­ons (e.g. detec­tor con­trols, DAQ, HV, LV) is requi­red. Know­ledge of Ger­man is advan­ta­ge­ous.

What we of­fer:

The posi­tion is for 3 years with the option of exten­sion and is to be fil­led as soon as pos­si­ble. This is a full-time posi­tion.


The salary cor­re­sponds to level E13 TV-L.
