The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Chair (W2) of Ame­ri­can Stu­dies with a focus on Diver­sity Stu­dies (W2 with ten­ure track)

As a part of the Ten­ure Track Pro­gramme, the Insti­tute of Eng­lish and Ame­ri­can Stu­dies at the Faculty of Lin­gu­is­tics, Lite­ra­ture and Cul­tu­ral Stu­dies invi­tes app­li­ca­ti­ons for the
Chair (W2) of Ame­ri­can Stu­dies with a focus on Diver­sity Stu­dies (W2 with ten­ure track)
initi­ally limi­ted to a six-year con­tract as a tem­porary public offi­cial, to be fil­led at the ear­liest pos­si­ble date. In being appoin­ted to the chair, eva­lua­tion cri­te­ria will be mutually agreed upon, which will be eva­lua­ted by a faculty-wide and school-wide com­mis­sion at the latest in the fifth year of the chair. Fol­lo­wing a posi­tive eva­lua­tion, a per­ma­nent Chair (W2) of Ame­ri­can Stu­dies with a focus on Diver­sity Stu­dies will be gran­ted without a rene­wed selec­tion pro­cess.

Work­ing field:

During the tem­porary chair, the app­li­cants must prove that they are capa­ble of ful­fil­ling the rese­arch and teaching requi­re­ments in the field of Ame­ri­can Stu­dies with a focus on Cul­tu­ral Stu­dies and with a his­to­ri­cal per­spec­tive. It is also expec­ted that the can­di­date has a focus in a mini­mum of one area of Ame­ri­can Stu­dies – Diver­sity Stu­dies (e.g. Race and Eth­ni­city Stu­dies, Gen­der and Sexua­lity Stu­dies, Disa­bi­lity Stu­dies). It is desi­red that the can­di­date has the ability to con­nect with social, his­to­ri­cal or media sci­ence rese­arch con­texts. Expe­ri­ence in inter­na­tio­nal work con­texts and in the suc­cess­ful acqui­si­tion of third-party funds is pre­fer­red.
In addi­tion to coope­ra­tion with other Chairs at the Insti­tute of Eng­lish and Ame­ri­can Stu­dies, the app­li­cant is expec­ted to be invol­ved in inter­di­sci­pli­nary and cross-faculty rese­arch, in par­ti­cu­lar through input for exis­ting teaching and rese­arch alli­an­ces at the School of Huma­nities and Social Sci­en­ces (e.g. at the Centre for Inte­gra­tion Stu­dies) and through active par­ti­ci­pa­tion in esta­blish-ing new rese­arch col­la­bo­ra­ti­ons in the Rese­arch Prio­rity Area "Cul­ture and Socie­tal Change". One of the main tasks in teaching is to work in the Eng­lish-Ame­ri­can degree pro­gram­mes, inclu­ding teaching Eng­lish to Edu­ca­tion stu­dents. Invol­ve­ment in the deve­lop­ment of new cour­ses and inter­di­sci­pli­nary teaching is wel­co­med. Active par­ti­ci­pa­tion in aca­de­mic self-admi­nis­tra­tion and in the aca­de­mic com­mit­tees of the faculty is requi­red.


Essen­tial ele­ments of the eva­lua­tion will be sci­en­ti­fic suc­cess in the form of the publi­ca­tion of a fur­ther post­doc­to­ral mono­graph, regu­lar peer-reviewed publi­ca­ti­ons in jour­nals and antho­lo­gies, the suc­cess­ful app­li­ca­tion for at least one rese­arch-rela­ted third-party fun­ding pro­ject, the acqui­si­tion of third-party funds, the orga­ni­sa­tion of at least one inter­na­tio­nal con­fe­rence, active par­ti­ci­pa­tion in didac­tic mea­su­res for hig­her edu­ca­tion, invol­ve­ment in the field of know­ledge trans­fer as well as posi­tively eva­lua­ted teaching per­for­mance in Eng­lish at the level of a W2 chair.
App­li­cants must ful­fil the employ­ment qua­li­fi­ca­tion requi­re­ments of § 58 of the Act on the Auto­nomy of Insti­tu­ti­ons of Hig­her Edu­ca­tion in the Free State of Sax­ony (Hig­her Edu­ca­tion Act of the Free State of Sax­ony – SächsHSFG). In addi­tion, a rele­vant doc­to­rate of out­stan­ding qua­lity in Ame­ri­can Stu­dies, rele­vant rese­arch expe­ri­ence bey­ond the doc­to­rate, high-qua­lity publi­ca­ti­ons as well as pedago­gi­cal apti­tude and teaching expe­ri­ence in Ame­ri­can Stu­dies must be pro­ven in order to be recrui­ted.
