BACHELOR THESIS PROPOSAL

Multimodal imaging of cortical bone porosity of the human femoral neck.

Working field:

DESCRIPTION: Biomedical imaging of 3D bone structures has received increased attention due to its potential for the understanding and diagnosis of human bone fragility. A number of new imaging modalities have been introduced in recent years, each of these revealing different properties of the same material. 3D High-resolution computed tomography (CT) images (figure LEFT) are becoming available to clinicians and biomedical researchers for the assessment of bone strength. However, microstructural parameter such as bone porosity (figure RIGHT) play a role in the bone fracture mechanisms and remain beyond the limit resolution of CT scans.

Requirements:

Within this thesis, we aim at imaging the cortical bone porosity of the femoral neck, being this the most important fracture site in the elderly population. The student will perform Scanning Acoustic Microscopy scans of human hip samples and combine these with already available CT acquisitions. We will learn together the basic concepts of biomedical 2D and 3D imaging and apply these to characterize some of the structural properties of cortical bone.

REQUIREMENTS: No previous knowledge is needed for this thesis but you should feel motivated to learn about the marvel of bone.

What we offer:

To work in an international and interdisciplinary research Environment.
