Com­mu­nic­a­tions Engin­eer­ing (Nach­rich­ten­tech­nik)

Work­ing field:

The rese­arch is focu­sed on invest­ig­a­tions and devel­op­ment of a new gen­er­a­tion of wire­less com­mu­nic­a­tion sys­tems with ultra-high data rate, low latency and high reli­ab­il­ity. A spe­cific focus is on Phys­ical Layer (PHY) algo­rithms and archi­tec­tures. New wave­forms for wire­less trans­mis­sion as well as new base­band-pro­ces­sing algo­rithms and archi­tec­tures will be deve­lo­ped. Wire­less com­mu­nic­a­tions is com­bined with ran­ging and loc­al­iz­a­tion. The rese­arch is rela­ted to vari­ous EU pro­jects for the devel­op­ment of 5G mobile radio sys­tems. The Rese­arch Group at IHP has extens­ive know-how, and rich exper­i­ence in this area and enter­tains strong inter­na­tio­nal con­nec­tions to other renow­ned groups. The work envir­on­ment is excep­tion­ally good and the avail­able tools and equip­ment are state-of-the-art. A PhD degree can be pur­sued and will be encour­aged.

Require­ments:

The suc­cess­ful can­did­ate (m/f) has a Mas­ter’s Degree, a Uni­ver­sity Dip­loma Degree (or equi­val­ent) in Com­mu­nic­a­tions Engin­eer­ing, Elec­tri­cal Engin­eer­ing/Elec­tron­ics, Tele­com­mu­nic­a­tions, or Com­puter Sci­ence with above aver­age gra­des. Pre­fer­ably the app­lic­ant should have know­ledge and skills in the fol­low­ing areas:
  • Com­mu­nic­a­tions Engin­eer­ing and Com­mu­nic­a­tions The­ory
  • Tele­com­mu­nic­a­tion sys­tems and sig­nal pro­ces­sing
  • MIMO algo­rithms and archi­tec­tures
  • Ran­ging tech­niques (for in-door pos­i­tion­ing) based on time-of-flight meas­ure­ments
  • 5G net­work archi­tec­tures based on wire­less and wired com­mu­nic­a­tions
  • Sim­u­la­tion using MAT­LAB, SIM­ULINK or sim­ilar tools
  • Design of digi­tal sys­tems and cir­cuits includ­ing VHDL mod­el­ing, sim­u­la­tion and syn­the­sis (optio­nal)

The can­did­ate (m/f) is expec­ted to be highly motiv­ated with very good exper­i­men­tal and the­or­et­ical skills. Very good oral and writ­ten skills in Ger­man and Eng­lish are man­dat­ory.
