Research Associate (PostDoc)

Part-time employment may be possible; under the reserve that funds are granted

Your responsibility:

The position involves scientific work within a DFG-funded project on the design of reference electrode-integrated membrane flow cells for CO2 capture and conversion. Responsibilities include
i) designing and conducting original research on electro-swing CO2 capture and conversion,
ii) characterizing CO2-active sorbents, electrolytes, and electrode materials,
iii) operating reference electrode-integrated CO2 capture cells,
iv) applying operando analytical techniques (e.g., FTIR, UV–vis, DEMS) to elucidate interfacial CO2 binding and release mechanisms, and
v) designing Ir-Ni anode electrocatalysts and electrodes for oxygen evolution.
The overarching aim is to develop a scalable, energy-optimized electrochemical process for CO2 capture and release using advanced electrochemical reactor concepts. Cell performance characterization is achieved using micro-GC, HPLC and NMR for Faradaic-efficiency calculations.

Your profile:

  • successfully completed scientific university degree (Master, Diploma or equivalent) and PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related fields, with a focus on both water electrolysis and CO2 electrolysis
  • strong experimental skills in reference-electrode integrated micro-GC, HPLC and NMR, and RDE / RDE / MEA
  • experience with in situ/operando techniques (e.g., FTIR, XAS, adsorption capacitance analysis) is highly advantageous
  • experience in assembling, operating, and analysing water electrolysis and CO2 electrochemical cells
  • strong scientific writing skills with a track record of publications
  • excellent command of written and spoken English; German skills are beneficial
  • independent scientific working style (is desirable)
  • knowledge of electrochemical reactor engineering or scale-up (is desirable)
  • very good teamwork skills, especially with regard to supervising students (is desirable)
  • experience in project acquisition (is desirable)

What we offer:

  • a varying job within an international university
  • cooperation with other research facilities and industry
  • a modern workspace in Berlin
  • international renowned and motivated team
  • a nice working atmosphere
