Technische Universität Berlin - Faculty VI - Institute of Applied Geosciences / Hydrogeology

Technische Universität Berlin offers an open position:

Research Assistant - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

part-time employment may be possible

Working field:

The Department of Hydrogeology at TU Berlin investigates the sustainable management of groundwater re-sources that require modern management concepts due to land use change and climate change. The department has an extensive experimental field equipment as well as two hydrogeological test sites (hard rock and porouse media) for research and teaching in the Brandenburg region.
Within the framework of the position, hydrosystems influenced by opencast mining (limestone and lignite) are to be experimentally characterized at two locations in Brandenburg:

  1. The Rüdersdorf open-cast limestone mine (hardrock aquifer) in the east of Berlin and
  2. the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Spreewald, which has and will undergo significant changes in the wa-ter balance and water chemistry due to both climate change and the lignite phase-out in Lusatia.
Using modern modelling approaches, management concepts are to be developed to preserve the ecosystems and groundwater resources in the region and to secure Berlin's water supply.
The work is being carried out in close cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics (LIAG), the Environmental Research Centre (UFZ), the BTU Cottbus, the company CEMEX, the Biosphere Spreewald and the LMBV. The work at the Rüdersdorf site is being carried out as part of the BMBF project GRaCCE (https://me-wac-gracce.de/).

Requirements:

  • Successfully completed academic university degree (Master, Diploma or equivalent) in Earth Sciences or physical geography, hydrology, geoecology, environmental sciences or similar
  • PhD with a focus on Water-related topics, such as hydrology, hydrogeology, ecohydrology
  • Good German language skills (at least C1) for an exchange with the water authorities of Brandenburg and the local population in the Spreewald
  • Readiness for field work, such as lifting heavy equipment even in difficult weather conditions.
  • Driving licence class B

The following skills are also desirable:

  • Knowledge of flow in unsaturated and saturated media
  • Knowledge of stochastic methods and geostatistics
  • Knowledge of remote sensing
