Freie Universität Berlin - Fachbereich Mathematik und Informatik - Institut für Mathematik Applied Analysis Group

This PostDoc position is part of the Applied Analysis group under supervision of Prof. Dr.
Marita Thomas at Freie Universität Berlin (https://www.mi.fu-berlin.de/en/math/groups/ag-
appliedanalysis/index.html ). There are strong scientific links to the research in the
Collaborative Research Center CRC 1114 Scaling Cascades in Complex Systems
(https://www.mi.fu-berlin.de/en/sfb1114/index.html ) and to other third-party funded projects
in the field of mathematical analysis of partial differential equations with applications in
engineering, geoscience or biology.

Research assistant (postdoc) (m/f/d)

full-time job
limited to 3 years
salary grade (Entgeltgruppe) 13 TV-L FU
reference code: HH1-AG-Thomas-2024

Working field:

This PostDoc position is devoted to the mathematical analysis of systems of nonlinear, resp.
nonsmooth partial differential equations (PDEs). In particular, also stochastic perturbations of
such systems shall be studied. It is tightly connected to the projects C02, B09, and C09 of
CRC 1114 and to
other third-party funded projects, which analytically study such PDE systems arising in
engineering or biological applications. Research-relevant PDE-systems thus stem from, e.g.,
the mathematical modeling of thermomechanical and chemical processes in porous media or
multiphase-fluids. The research results are to be published in scientific journals and to be
presented on international conferences. The position entails a regular teaching duty in the
field of analysis, functional analysis, PDEs, calculus of variations. The position offers the
possibility to earn a scientific qualification (habilitation).

Requirements:

Requirements:

The successful candidate holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics.

(Professional) Experience:

We expect several years of research experience in one of the above-mentioned areas of
mathematical analysis, documented by publications in relevant scientific journals.

Desirable:

The successful candidate has a profound background in mathematical modeling and analysis
of nonlinear, non-smooth partial differential equations and variational methods in connection
to one of the applications mentioned above. Willingness to interdisciplinary collaborations is
expected.
Therefore, preliminary knowledge in one of the above mentioned fields of application is
desirable, or the strong interest and the readiness to increase knowledge in these fields.
Besides, experience in stochastic analysis is helpful. Moreover, experience in university
teaching is useful. Good language skills in English and German are desirable and, if needed,
the participation in German courses offered by the Freie Universität Berlin is encouraged.
FYI: a complete set of application documents should contain a motivation letter with
information on the research areas, a CV, a publication list and copies of your Master and Ph.
D. certificates in one document.

How to apply:

For further information, please contact Prof. Dr. Marita Thomas (marita.thomas@fu-berlin.de

Applications should be sent by e-mail, together with significant documents, indicating the
reference code, no later than August 12th, 2024 in PDF format (preferably as one
document) to Prof. Dr. Marita Thomas: beate.pierchalla@fu-berlin.de or postal to
