The SFB 1449 ‘Dynamic Hydrogels at Biological Interfaces’ is concerned with investigating the most important physico-chemical factors that determine the protective functions of hydrogels at biological interfaces. Particular molecular targets here are mucus and glycocalyx.
The aim of the Pagel working group is to develop new mass spectrometry-based methods for the structural analysis of glycoproteins from mucus. Both established techniques and new methods such as ion mobility mass spectrometry and gas-phase infrared spectroscopy are used. Later, the developed techniques will be made available to the members of the consortium.

Working field:

Research activities: purification, separation and analysis of mucus glycoproteins and glycans. Development of novel workflows for tandem-MS and IM-MS based analysis of glycans and glycoconjugates. Automation of the developed methods and application of machine learning approaches for computer-aided analysis of large data sets.
The position is for qualification purposes.


  • Completed university degree (M.Sc. or Diploma degree) and completed doctorate in Chemistry or Biochemistry


  • Experience in handling chromatographic techniques
  • Experience with mass spectrometry and ion mobility mass spectrometry
  • Solid knowledge in Analytical and Physical Chemistry
  • Experience with omics techniques
  • Good command of written and spoken English
