Student Research Assistant – Generative AI for Behavioral Experiments

English

Seeking highly motivated Student Research Assistant to our support research at the nexus of computer science and social sciences

Working field:

The Center for Humans and Machines (CHM) at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin conducts interdisciplinary science to understand, anticipate, and shape major disruptions from digital media and Artificial Intelligence to the way we think, learn, work, play, cooperate, and govern. Our goal is to understand how intelligent machines are shaping human society today and how they may continue to shape it in the future. The Center is comprised of an interdisciplinary, international, and diverse group of scholars, and a science support team.

To complement this team, we are looking for a motivated Student Research Assistant who is comfortable working at the intersection of computer science and social sciences. In close collaboration with researchers of the center, you will develop, adapt, train and integrate generative machine learning models which will be used in behavioral experiments involving human participants. Depending on the needs of the team and your personal interests and skills, the work could also involve experimental design and data collection.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop, adapt, train and integrate generative machine learning models (e.g. LLama, StableDiffusion)
  • Assess both quantitative and qualitative aspects of model performance
  • Train, deploy and manage models on our in-house computing cluster
  • Engage in regular discussions and presentations of your work within the research team, contributing to the overall understanding of the project's progress and goals

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master's program at a German university, pursuing cognitive science, computer science, physics, or a related fields
  • Proficiency with deep learning libraries such as PyTorch and the Hugging Face ecosystem
  • Solid understanding of supervised, self-supervised, and reinforcement learning techniques in machine learning
  • Familiarity with generative neural networks like language models or text-to-image systems is highly desirable
  • Experience with High Performance Computing and the development of API/Web Services is a plus
  • A keen interest in exploring behavioral aspects of human-AI interactions

What we offer:

  • Close collaboration with the CHM team
  • Comprehensive onboarding and time to learn new skills in an agile environment
  • Personal supervision by the scientific researchers and research engineers in the lab
  • Involvement in scientific work related to artificial intelligence and its societal impact
  • The position is limited to one year with the possibility of extension
  • Salary: 14,33 €/hour

How to apply:
