The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). The institute also maintains locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

PhD student in Agricultural Economics (f/m/d)

We are offering part-time position (65% of regular weekly working hours) temporarily limited until March 31, 2027 at our location in Müncheberg as PhD student in Agricultural Economics (f/m/d).

Working field:

The research group “Farm Economics and Ecosystem Services” is a team of dedicated postdocs and PhD students who want to make a difference through good science, mutual support and exchange with other disciplines and practice. Our research topics range from diversification and digitization, farm-level sustainability, collaborations to deliver biodiversity to policy impact assessments. To answer our research questions, we use a suite of economic methods with a particular focus on farm-level bio-economic models in various national and international projects.

The offered position is one of three other PhD-positions that are funded through the AQUATRANS project. A strong collaboration with other teams on “Identifying land use practices and crop rotations that help to minimize negative effects on the water cycle” and “Effective collaboration and social learning models for understanding the social factors that can hinder or foster agroecological transitions” is part of this project. The main work site will be at ZALF Müncheberg, but several research stays in Northern Ghana will be required.

Tasks:

  • analyse the performance of agroecological farming systems with a farmer-based multi-criteria-assessment framework based on the principles of agroecology
  • review existing agroecology transition assessment frameworks
  • develop a farmer-knowledge based indicator set for AE assessment for the context of smallholder farms in Northern Ghana
  • collaborate with scientists from other disciplines to include social, agronomic and ecological assessments
  • analyse secondary data, develop and support farmer surveys and assist with workshops
  • publish your work in leading scientific journals

Requirements:

  • master of science in agriculture economics, resource economics or related
  • solid skills in assessment methods, database techniques and software languages
  • good knowledge of agricultural practices in Sub-Saharan Africa, esp. Northern Ghana
  • ability to work in an interdisciplinary team as well as independently
  • strong interest in scientific writing and excellent command of English
