Research Assistant - 0.5 working-time - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

Working field:

For the research and implementation phase of the research project 'ReMaL- Reducing Marine Litter in the Mediterranean through Waste Wise Cities Lebanon - funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) - we are looking for a researcher for the following activities:

  • Support the local partners in the preparation of project proposals related to local waste management, and in the implementation planning of the selected pilot projects (together with the partners UN-Habitat Lebanon Office and Wuppertal Institute).
  • Definition of evaluation methodology and criteria for the selection of pilot project proposals
  • Support the identification of technological implementation options and suitable locations for waste management pilot projects, based on the pilot projects and local context
  • Support the preparation of feasibility studies for the pilot projects, including relevant financial aspects.
  • Support the consortium partners in collection and processing data collected from municipalities on waste streams, collection systems, treatment facilities and landfills. Review of outcomes and summarizing facts and figures from local municipalities (e.g. graphics, diagram, etc).
  • Support the analysis of policy strategies to implement more sustainable waste policies along the waste value chain, according to the local regulation framework.
  • Support the formulation of policy recommendations for waste management and financing mechanisms policies. Consolidate managerial guidance to be shared with the Ministries.

The scientific work is part of an interdisciplinary consortium with the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy. On-site coordination in Lebanon will be carried out by the UN-Habitat Lebanon Office

Requirements:

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in urban and regional planning, economics, urban design, geography, waste management or related disciplines.
  • Interdisciplinary research and project experience, preferably in the fields of waste management and/or urban and regional development.
  • Knowledge of analysis and derivation of economic indicators (CAPEX, OPEX, financial flow analysis).
  • Knowledge of methods and theory in the relevant fields of international urban and regional research.
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills; good knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.
  • Experience and excellent skills in writing and editing academic and non-academic texts in English.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes, knowledge of GIS software (QGIS) is an asset.

The successful applicant will not be expected to travel to Lebanon in the context of the project. On-site coordination will be provided by the UN-Habitat Lebanon office.
