Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf e.V.

Through cutting-edge research in the fields of ENERGY, HEALTH and MATTER, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) solves some of the pressing societal and industrial challenges of our time. Join our 1.500 employees from more than 50 nations at one of our six research sites and help us moving research to the next level!

The Institute of Radiation Physics conducts research for states of matter under extreme conditions and in very small dimensions.
As part of the Institute, the Department of Laser Particle Acceleration invites applications as PhD Student (f/m/d) Performing and analyzing large scale parallel simulations on HZDR laser systems DRACO and PENELOPE.

The position will be available from 1 August 2023. The employment contract is limited to three years.

PhD Student (f/m/d) Performing and analyzing large scale parallel simulations on short high-intensity laser pulse interaction with solids

Working field:

  • Assist the understanding of experiments from our HZDR laser systems DRACO and PENELOPE by performing and analyzing large scale parallel simulations
  • Work in our team on Computational Physics, simulating and understanding fundamental processes that occur during the interaction of high power lasers with solids or near critical density targets
  • Develop new modules for PIConGPU according to the experimental needs, e.g. to simulate new probing detector signals (e.g. spectrometers)
  • Participate in our team's effort to develop new experimental ideas including tayloring the interaction process, probing the self emission of the laser irradiated plasmas, or performing probing experiments at HIBEF (EuropeanXFEL)

Requirements:

  • Master`s degree in Computational Physics or closely related discipline
  • Experience in computer simulations, ideally previous experience on computer clusters
  • lnterest in the understanding of the physics of interactions of high power lasers with solids, ideally you have knowledge on plasma physics or radiative properties of warm to hot matter
  • You are comfortable in English language
  • Helpful, but not required is the knowledge of C++, python, and programming for accelerators

What we offer:

  • A vibrant research community in an open, diverse and international work environment
  • Scientific excellence and extensive professional networking opportunities
  • A structured PhD program with a comprehensive range of continuing education and networking opportunities - more information about the PhD program at the HZDR can be found here
  • The employment contract is limited to three years
  • Salary and social benefits in accordance with the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD-Bund) including 30 days of paid holiday leave, company pension scheme (VBL)
  • We support a good work-life balance with the possibility of part-time employment and flexible working hours
  • Numerous company health management offerings
  • An employer subsidy for the VVO job ticket

How to apply:

Kindly submit your completed application (including cover letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, etc.) only via our Online-application-system: https://www.hzdr.de/db/Cms?pNid=490&pLang=en&pOid=69046
