The professorship represents the field of "Environmental Governance" in research and teaching. The focus is on the analysis and governance options of spatial and land-use-related human-environment systems in the context of spatially oriented environmental planning (including environmental assessment, landscape and spatial planning, protected areas, green infrastructure) and relevant fields of action (e.g. renewable energies, biodiversity protection, adaptation to climate change). Of particular interest are the protection and development of the environmental assets soil, water, climate, air, biodiversity, landscapes and land, as well as human well-being and health. Explicitly, no focus should be put on climate policy/climate protection. The position holder will develop the department into a nationally and internationally renowned player in the field of spatially and land-use-related environmental governance.
Teaching duties include courses in the German and English-language bachelor's and master's program "Ecology and Environmental Planning" as well as the international English-language "Environmental Planning" master’s program. The department's courses provide an introduction to and deeper examination of relevant aspects of governance and, depending on the subject background of the position holder, may cover environmental policy, environmental sociology, environmental economics, environmental law and other areas related to environmental governance. The courses are taught in German and English.
Further responsibilities include leading and managing the department and its staff; promotion of young academics, women and social diversity; knowledge transfer; internationally-oriented initiatives; gender and diversity competent and sustainability-oriented action as well as committee and commission duties.
Applicants must fulfill the appointment criteria according to Section 100 BerlHG. These include a university degree, preferably in a social science subject (e.g. political science, sociology, economics, administrative science, law); a particular aptitude for scientific work (usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate in the above-mentioned subjects on a topic relevant to spatially related environmental governance); additional academic achievements (usually a positively evaluated junior professorship, a habilitation or equivalent achievements); as well as pedagogical aptitude, documented in a teaching portfolio (for further details, please refer to the website of Technische Universität Berlin, https://www.tu.berlin/go209650/
Applicants know how to interpret "environmental governance" in the context of spatially-related environmental planning. Comprehensive knowledge of at least four of the following topics is expected, including the methods required for their sound scientific treatment. This knowledge is always related to 1) direct and indirect environmental impacts of land use, 2) spatially-related environmental planning (including environmental assessment, landscape and spatial planning, protected areas, green infrastructure) including environmental policy and planning strategies, objectives and measures to safeguard and improve environmental quality (soil, water, climate, air, land, biodiversity, landscape), for example in the context of nature conservation, and 3) related governance approaches to maintain and improve environmental quality:
- Resource policy for the institutionalization of approaches for environmental policy solutions on different scales in various spatially-related fields of action, e.g. water, biological diversity, raw materials;
- Structures, spatial-administrative levels, actors, institutions, processes and power relations in different contexts of environmental governance;
- Governance-related definition, preconditions, necessities and effects of a socio-ecological transformation; consideration of environmental justice issues and fair allocation and distributional processes;
- Identification, analysis and management of overarching societal changes and processes relevant to environmental planning, nature conservation and environmental policy (methods e.g. horizon scanning, policy field analyses, scenario approaches, backcasting, forecasting, game theory and agent-based approaches);
- Importance of commons for land-use-related environmental issues;
- Evaluation of the environmental impacts of land use/land-use-change and associated ecosystem services;
- Evaluation of the impact of standards, concepts and instruments of spatially-related environmental and nature conservation policy, incl. the effects ("trade-offs") on other (environmental) policy levels and fields of action;
- Multi-level environmental strategies (multi-level governance);
- Interaction of science, business, civil society and politics within the framework of environmental governance (e.g. policy advice, citizen science, transdisciplinarity);
- Application of actor-related and social theories with regard to spatial environmental issues (e.g. action theory, actor-centered institutionalism, systems theory etc.).
Technische Universität Berlin expects its professors to be willing and able to assume responsibility for the management and strategic development of the department and its staff. In particular, this includes an understanding of the special responsibility for creating gender- and diversity-sensitive working and study conditions. The position also requires the willingness and ability to promote young academics, women and social diversity as well as contribute to academic self-governance. Willingness and ability to set impulses for internationalization and sustainability-oriented action in research and teaching is expected. Experience of science communication and knowledge-transfer initiatives is desirable.
As a university with an international profile, our professors are required to have very good English skills and we expressly welcome applications from non-German-speaking researchers.
