The Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is a joint medical faculty, which serves both Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. As one of the largest university hospitals in Europe with an important history, it plays a leading role in research, teaching and clinical care. The Charité university hospital has also made a name for itself as a modern business with certifications in the medical, clinical and management fields.

The Rocks group "Systemic Cell Dynamics" at the Institute of Biochemistry combines cell and systems biological approaches with advanced fluorescence microscopy to investigate how cells change shape and move. These processes rely on Rho GTPase proteins that direct the cytoskeleton to generate mechanical forces.
We aim to understand how feedback interactions of the involved players at the plasma membrane create spatio-temporal signalling patterns that coordinate phenomena such as cell polarization, cell adhesion or directed cell migration. Our focus is on the RhoGEF and RhoGAP regulatory proteins, for which we have shown a key function in the control of cytoskeletal dynamics. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate for a DFG-funded PostDoc or PhD position.

PostDoc (PhD Position) - Cell Biology and Morphodynamics

Working field:

Several projects are available aiming to elucidate fundamental mechanisms guiding self-organized cell morphogenesis. These include
  • the feedback interplay between phosphoinositides, Rho GTPase and actin governing cell polarity
  • the collective control of cell protrusion-retraction dynamics by focal adhesion-associated Rho GTPase regulators
  • the role protein condensates/phase separation in cytoskeletal dynamics
  • single molecule analysis of Rho GTPase membrane dynamics and signalling zone nano-organisation
Your work will include (but is not limited to) a range of cell and molecular biological approaches, as well as live cell microscopy (confocal, TIRF, FRET, biosensors, optogenetics, single molecule imaging), proteomics (mass spectrometry), data analysis and assay development.

  • PhD degree (for PostDoc applicants) or Master's degree (for PhD applicants) in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Biophysics or related subjects (or soon to be finished)
  • Keen interest in understanding the spatio-temporal control of signalling processes and cellular dynamics. Candidates dedicated to succeeding in academic research career are preferred and such career paths will be supported
  • Experience in advanced live cell microscopy, cell biology and signal transduction
  • Track record of scientific productivity
  • Team spirit, flexibility and passion for science
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills
