Join our team and research on complex distributed software sustems with a focus on multi-agent
systems for distributed optimization of complex industrial processes.

We, the Department of Agent Technologies in Operational Applications and Telecommunications (AOT) of TU Berlin, are looking for a research assistant (PhD student, m///d) to participate in the research project "HyMAS" on the development of a hybrid multi-agent system for self-controlling steel production. The core components of the envisaged solution are autonomous software agents that autonomously, collaboratively and automatically create production plans, monitor their realization and dynamically adjust them as required. Further, core concepts of this system shall be generalized and applied to a new distributed multi-agent architecture.

Under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Dr. h.c. Sahin Albayrak, we have been conducting
research at the DAI Lab and the AOT department since 1992 with the goal of developing and
communicating technologies for a new generation of services and distributed systems. To this end, we conduct innovative research and development projects with well-known companies. Our
international team, the diverse proiects and the modern infrastructure including a comprehensive autonomous systems testbed provide the ideal environment for you to pursue a PhD, contribute your ideas and strive for scientific excellence.

Working field:

  • Work in a cross-project, interdisciplinary research group occupied with different projects in the scope of distributed AI, automation, ML, etc.
  • Work in a research project for the development of a multi-agent system for the distributed and automated optimization of steel production processes
  • Conceptional design and development of a distributed system for autonomous and collaborative planning of production processes
  • Addressing scientific and technical challenges like distributed planning, optimization, and negotiation mechanisms
  • Further development of an existing multi-agent framework
  • Cooperation with multiple project partners and Integration of components developed by different project partners

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diploma, or equivalent) in computer science, computer engineering, business informatics, physics, mathematics or a related field
  • Knowledge of concepts, methods, and technologies in the fields: Development of distributed systems, multi-agent systems, (distributed) optimization algorithms, planning & negotiation mechanisms
  • Good skills of abstraction, modeling, and finding creative solutions
  • Experiences in developing complex, distributed software systems, and software engineering in general (version control, testing, integration, etc.)
  • Very good programming skills (preferably Java); knowledge of industrial simulation environments and machine learning can be beneficial
  • Good command of German and English
