University Professor of Physical Chemistry with a Focus on Applied Physical Chemistry

The Department of Biology, Chemistry and Pharmacy is conducting a search for a professorship in physical chemistry with a research focus on applied physical chemistry situated in the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The successful applicant will cover the area named above in research and teaching.

Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).

Successful candidates will have a distinguished international track record in research and teaching in the area of physical chemistry with a focus on questions related to applied physical chemistry. Their research background should complement the other areas of expertise represented at the institute. They will have experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects. Appointees should also have experience with independently carrying out teaching responsibilities in physical chemistry and be able to conduct courses in German and English.

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

The new professor is expected to establish an active research group in the field of applied physical chemistry, research directions including, for example, the area of functional materials and/or their interfaces with an emphasis on a molecular understanding of these systems. Ideally, they will be willing to contribute to existing and future collaborative research activities and promote their advancement as appropriate. These include, in particular, participation in the CRC 1349 “Fluorine-Specific Interactions: Fundamentals and Function,” CRC 1449 “Dynamic Hydrogels at Biointerfaces,” or work with the center for Supramolecular Functional Architectures at Biointerfaces (SupraFAB). Participation in other collaborative research groups and organizations established in Berlin is also desired. The appointee should be prepared to teach physical chemistry courses for all degree programs offered by the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry, in particular in the bachelor’s program and the master’s program in chemistry. The master’s program is taught in English. In addition, they will be expected to engage with gender and diversity issues relevant to their field as part of their research and teaching.
