Research assistant - salary grade E 14 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

part-time employment may be possible

The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) is the joint association of four Berlin universities: Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität of Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The four partners have joined forces to further develop the science landscape in Berlin.

The project “A Digital Research Space for the BUA” is a joint initiative of Technische Universität Berlin (Quality and Usability Lab; Open Distributed Systems Group) and Freie Universität Berlin (Human-Centered Computing Group) and is embedded in Objective 3 “advancing research quality and value” and Objective 5 “sharing resources” of the BUA.
The position is at the Quality and Usability Lab of the Technical University of Berlin, which deals with the design and evaluation of human-machine interactions. We focus on self-determined work in an interdisciplinary and international team; for this we offer open and flexible working conditions that promote scientific and personal exchange and are a prerequisite for first-class results.

Working field:

Within the project “A digital research space for the BUA”, an open science platform for research data will be developed. The platform is intended to allow for the interactive search, exploration, visualization, and analysis of research data. It is further meant to demonstrate open science within concrete usage scenarios in the everyday work of researchers in various disciplines. The tasks include conception, design and development of this platform. In particular, it involves the implementation of graphical user interfaces with various basic functions, the connection to external data and knowledge sources, and the integration of existing components.

  • Conception, design and development of an open science platform for research data based on already existing components,
  • evaluation of relevant approaches and systems, and selection of suitable frameworks and technologies,
  • project lead and manangement,
  • collaboration with regional, national, and international partners,
  • research in the areas of digitalization of science and research data infrastructures, with a special focus on natural language processing,
  • regular presentation and publication of research results,
  • teaching at the Quality and Usability Lab.

More details about the BUA can be found at: https://www.berlin-university-alliance.de,

  • Successfully completed university degree (master's, diploma or equivalent) in computer science, computer engineering, media informatics, digital media (or a similar technical background),
  • very good language and writing skills in German or English,
  • good programming skills and safe handling of development tools (experience in Python and JavaScript, basic knowledge in Java),
  • experience in the development of web applications (ideally full stack) and knowledge of current web frameworks and web technologies,
  • fundamental knowledge of methods and algorithms for data search, exploration, visualization, and analysis,
  • basic understanding of natural language processing,
  • basic understanding of the semantic web, linked data, and knowledge graphs.
