Tech­ni­sche Infor­ma­ti­ons­bi­blio­thek (TIB) - Pro­gram Area C, Rese­arch and Devel­op­ment

TIB, being part of the Leib­niz Rese­arch Asso­ci­ation, is with around 550 employ­ees one of the lar­gest tech­nical inform­a­tion cen­tres in Ger­many, hav­ing three main func­tions:

1. Act­ing in the capa­city of the Leib­niz Inform­a­tion Centre for Sci­ence and Tech­no­logy, our for­ward-look­ing ser­vices secure the infra­struc­tural require­ments for pro­vid­ing rese­arch­ers in sci­ence and indus­try with high-qual­ity inform­a­tion and lit­er­at­ure.
2. Car­ry­ing out cut­ting edge rese­arch to fur­ther expand TIB’s role as a Ger­man inform­a­tion centre for the digit­iz­a­tion of sci­ence and tech­no­logy.
3. Offer lib­rary ser­vices for the Leib­niz Uni­ver­sity Han­nover.

Open Source Soft­ware Engin­eer (m/f/d)

Work­ing field:

  • Fur­ther devel­op­ment and oper­a­tion of the open source repos­it­ory soft­ware
  • Enhance­ment and optim­isa­tion of the graph­ical user inter­face accord­ing to user-centred approaches
  • Link­ing the portal with other OER plat­forms
  • Imple­ment­a­tion/adapt­a­tion/exten­sion of inter­faces between the OER portal and learn­ing man­age­ment sys­tems (LMS)


You are equally exper­i­enced in fron­tend and backend devel­op­ment. Your expert­ise is rooted in web soft­ware engin­eer­ing, but you are also famil­iar with API design and data­bases. You should be able to think cre­at­ively, grasp new know­ledge quickly, be able to design and develop innov­at­ive soft­ware sys­tems and be inter­ested in mas­ter­ing com­plex chal­lenges.

The fol­low­ing qual­i­fic­a­tions are man­dat­ory
  • Suc­cess­fully com­pleted uni­versity degree (Bach­elor / FH-Dip­loma or Mas­ter / Uni­versity-Dip­loma) in a rel­ev­ant field of study, prefer­ably in com­puter sci­ence or a related field
  • Excel­lent know­ledge of mod­ern web devel­op­ment lan­guages (esp. TypeScript/Angu­lar, Java/Spring) and mod­ern soft­ware engin­eer­ing meth­ods (esp. Agile meth­ods, DevOps)
  • Pro­fi­ciency in spoken and writ­ten Eng­lish as well as Ger­man
  • Excel­lent know­ledge in the devel­op­ment and use of web ser­vices
  • Proven exper­i­ence in the devel­op­ment of or par­ti­cip­a­tion in open source soft­ware pro­jects
  • High degree of self-organ­isa­tion and exper­i­ence in work­ing inde­pend­ently
  • Exper­i­ence in con­cep­tual and cre­at­ive work on com­plex issues

What we of­fer:

Lower Sax­ony’s OER portal is a plat­form for the pro­vi­sion and re-use of high-qual­ity open teach­ing and learn­ing mater­i­als (Open Edu­ca­tional Resources, OER for short) for lec­tur­ers in the ter­tiary edu­ca­tion sec­tor. The Ger­man National Lib­rary of Sci­ence and Tech­no­logy (TIB) is devel­op­ing the portal as part of a four-year pro­ject, fun­ded by the Lower Sax­ony Min­istry of Sci­ence and Cul­ture (MWK), and is also oper­at­ing the portal in the long term bey­ond the pro­ject period.

Within the frame­work of this pro­ject, the Tech­nis­che Inform­a­tions­bib­lio­thek (TIB) – Leib­niz Inform­a­tion Centre for Sci­ence and Tech­no­logy – is look­ing to employ an

Open Source Soft­ware Engin­eer (m/f/d)

to build up and fur­ther develop the portal at the earli­est pos­sible oppor­tun­ity.

The pos­i­tion is ini­tially lim­ited until 31st July 2023 with envi­sioned exten­sion. The reg­u­lar weekly work­ing time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The pos­i­tion is gen­er­ally suit­able for part-time work. Depend­ing on your qual­i­fic­a­tion (Bach­elor’s/Mas­ter’s degree), you will be clas­si­fied in either pay scale group 12 or 13 TV-L.
