Technische Universität Dresden - Faculty of Physics, Institute of Applied Physics, Chair of Experimental Physics / Photophysics

The TU Dresden is one of eleven German universities that were identified as an “excellence university”. TUD has about 36.500 students and almost 5319 employees, 507 professors among them, and, thus, is the largest university in Saxony, today.

Having been committed to sciences and the engineering before the reunification of Germany, TU Dresden now is a multi-discipline university, also offering humanities and social sciences as well as medicine.

Research Associate / PhD Student

(subject to personal qualification, employees are remunerated according to salary group E13 TV-L)
The position is offered for the Collaborative Research Center 1143 „Correlated Magnetism: From Frustration to Topology” in the area of “Advanced Scanning Force Microscopy of topological solid state phenomena” starting at the earliest possible date, the position entails 75 % of the full-time weekly hours and is limited until December 31, 2022 with the option for extension, subject tot he availavility of ressources. The period of employment is governed by Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz-WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain a further academic qualification.

Working field:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the microscopic investigation of solid-state phenomena (magnetic, ferroelectric, multiferroic, etc.) in topological materials as well as related compounds, using different scanning probe methods [including magnetic force microscopy (MFM), Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), piezo-response force microscopy (PFM), both for imaging and spectroscopy]. The duties and responsibilities cover work in a clean-room environment, using cryogenic liquids (LN2 and LHe), operating ultra-high vacuum equipment, and applying various laser-light sources. The subject allows the candidate to become scientifically competitive internationally through peer-reviewed publications and conference contributions.

  • Very good university degree (Master, diploma, or equivalent) in physics
  • experience and understanding in the fields of magnetism or ferroelectricity, and scanning force microscopy
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • an independent, target- and solution-driven work attitude
  • fluent English both oral and written.
