The TU Dres­den is one of ele­ven Ger­man uni­ver­si­ties that were iden­ti­fied as an “excel­lence uni­ver­sity”. TUD has about 36.500 stu­dents and almost 5319 employees, 507 pro­fes­sors among them, and, thus, is the lar­gest uni­ver­sity in Sax­ony, today.

Having been com­mit­ted to sci­en­ces and the engi­nee­ring before the reuni­fi­ca­tion of Ger­many, TU Dres­den now is a multi-disci­pline uni­ver­sity, also offe­ring huma­nities and social sci­en­ces as well as medi­cine.

Rese­arch Asso­ciate / PhD Stu­dent

The posi­tion is offe­red for the Col­la­bo­ra­tive Rese­arch Cen­ter 1143 „Cor­re­la­ted Magne­tism: From Frus­tra­tion to Topo­logy” in the area of “Advan­ced Scan­ning Force Micro­scopy of topo­lo­gi­cal solid state phe­no­mena” star­ting at the ear­liest pos­si­ble date, the posi­tion ent­ails 75 % of the full-time wee­kly hours and is limi­ted until Decem­ber 31, 2022 with the option for exten­sion, sub­ject tot he avai­la­vi­lity of res­sour­ces. The period of employ­ment is gover­ned by Fixed Term Rese­arch Con­tracts Act (Wis­sen­schafts­zeit­ver­trags­ge­setz-WissZeitVG). The posi­tion offers the chance to obtain a fur­ther aca­de­mic qua­li­fi­ca­tion.

Work­ing field:

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date will be respon­si­ble for the micro­scopic inves­ti­ga­tion of solid-state phe­no­mena (magne­tic, fer­roelec­tric, mul­ti­fer­roic, etc.) in topo­lo­gi­cal mate­ri­als as well as rela­ted com­pounds, using dif­fe­rent scan­ning probe methods [inclu­ding magne­tic force micro­scopy (MFM), Kel­vin probe force micro­scopy (KPFM), piezo-response force micro­scopy (PFM), both for ima­ging and spec­tro­scopy]. The duties and respon­si­bi­li­ties cover work in a clean-room envi­ron­ment, using cryo­ge­nic liquids (LN2 and LHe), ope­ra­ting ultra-high vacuum equip­ment, and app­ly­ing various laser-light sources. The sub­ject allows the can­di­date to become sci­en­ti­fi­cally com­pe­ti­tive inter­na­tio­nally through peer-reviewed publi­ca­ti­ons and con­fe­rence con­tri­bu­ti­ons.

Require­ments:

  • Very good uni­versity degree (Mas­ter, dip­loma, or equi­val­ent) in phys­ics
  • exper­i­ence and under­stand­ing in the fields of mag­net­ism or fer­ro­elec­tri­city, and scan­ning force micro­scopy
  • excel­lent inter­per­sonal and com­mu­nic­a­tion skills
  • an inde­pend­ent, tar­get- and solu­tion-driven work atti­tude
  • flu­ent Eng­lish both oral and writ­ten.
