The doc­toral can­did­ate is work­ing on a PhD within the frame­work of the Innov­at­ive Train­ing Net­work (ITN) CLEO­PATRA: "Cross-lin­gual Event-cent­ric Open Ana­lyt­ics Research Academy" (http://cleopatra-project.eu/) fun­ded by the European Union (EU). A descrip­tion of the PhD topic can be found below.

The CLEO­PATRA ITN offers a unique inter­dis­cip­lin­ary and cross-sec­toral research and train­ing pro­gramme, which will explore how we can ana­lyse and under­stand major events that influ­ence and shape our lives and our soci­et­ies. It will facil­it­ate advanced cross-lin­gual pro­cessing of tex­tual and visual inform­a­tion related to key con­tem­por­ary events at scale, and will develop innov­at­ive meth­ods for effi­cient and intu­it­ive user access to and inter­ac­tion with mul­ti­lin­gual inform­a­tion.

Depend­ent on the indi­vidual research pro­ject, suc­cess­ful can­did­ates will have a strong back­ground in Com­puter Sci­ence or Digital Human­it­ies (an out­stand­ing MSc degree in the cor­res­pond­ing dis­cip­line). Good pro­fi­ciency in Eng­lish is expec­ted; know­ledge of fur­ther European lan­guages is of advant­age. Inter­na­tional exper­i­ence dur­ing your stud­ies or after­wards as well as good social and com­mu­nic­a­tion skills are help­ful.

As a suc­cess­ful can­did­ate, you will

• Con­duct research on your PhD topic at TIB in the con­text of the CLEO­PATRA pro­ject.
• Provide import­ant input to the devel­op­ment of integ­rated cross-lin­gual data ana­lyt­ics plat­forms.
• Act­ively par­ti­cip­ate in the train­ing pro­gramme offered by the CLEO­PATRA ITN.
• Engage with research­ers at CLEO­PATRA part­ner organ­isa­tions across the EU.
• Con­duct research vis­its and second­ments accord­ing to the indi­vidual career devel­op­ment plan.

PhD topic: Mul­timodal fact val­id­a­tion across mul­ti­lin­gual cor­pora
Unim­odal sys­tems that pro­cess nat­ural lan­guage pre­dom­in­ate in research on fact val­id­a­tion – but events are rarely described by text alone and often include visual inform­a­tion as well. The co-exist­ence of mul­tiple mod­al­it­ies cre­ates an oppor­tun­ity to imple­ment machine learn­ing sys­tems that retrieve, com­bine and model diverse inputs. Fact val­id­a­tion sys­tems that pro­cess mul­tiple mod­al­it­ies are able to assess addi­tional evid­ence, learn rich rep­res­ent­a­tions and con­duct sup­ple­ment­ary ana­lyses on source data.

• A suc­cess­fully com­pleted, sub­ject related uni­versity degree (Mas­ter or com­par­able), e. g. in Com­puter Sci­ence or related fields of study
• Very good tech­nical know­ledge in Com­puter Sci­ence
• Good com­mand of writ­ten and spoken Eng­lish; know­ledge of other European lan­guages is an advant­age
• Good social and espe­cially com­mu­nic­a­tion skills

• Interest in digital human­it­ies top­ics or inter­dis­cip­lin­ary work is help­ful

Mobil­ity Require­ments
To be eli­gible the applic­ant must sat­isfy the mobil­ity require­ments of Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions, as explained in full detail on pages 6 to 20. Accord­ing to these guidelines, at the time of recruit­ment, the poten­tial can­did­ate “must not have resided or car­ried out their main activ­ity (work, stud­ies, etc.) in the coun­try of the recruit­ing bene­fi­ciary for more than 12 months in the 3 years imme­di­ately before the recruit­ment date. Com­puls­ory national ser­vice, short stays such as hol­i­days and time spent as part of a pro­ced­ure for obtain­ing refugee status under the Geneva Con­ven­tion (1951) are not taken into account.” Fur­ther­more, accord­ing to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie rules, Early-Stage Research­ers shall, at the time of recruit­ment by the host organ­isa­tion, “be in the first four years (full-time equi­val­ent research exper­i­ence) of their research careers and have not been awar­ded a doc­toral degree”. to join the Visual Ana­lyt­ics Research Group (Prof. Dr. Ralph Ewerth) at the earli­est pos­sible oppor­tun­ity (latest start: July 1st, 2021) and sub­ject to the final approval of the third-party fund­ing. The PhD can­did­ate will be co-super­vised by Prof. Dr. Jens Lehmann from the Uni­versity of Bonn, Ger­many.

The pos­i­tion is ini­tially lim­ited to 1,5 years with envi­sioned exten­sion. The reg­u­lar weekly work­ing time is 39.8 hours (full-time). The remu­ner­a­tion is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.
